Anyone here shoot IR 50/50? There's a range that holds matches sort of close to my home and have a rifle that's capable of some competing.

Any advice for someone just wanting to try it out?

Just go and do it. I've never shot rimfire benchrest, but love Bill Calfee's articles in Precision Shooting Magazine on the guns he builds for the purpose. I've shot in a number of different kinds of matches over the years, and the one theme that seems to run through them all is that target shooters, more, it seems to me, than in any other sport, are open with their knowledge and happy to offer advice, help a beginner, coach someone through a rough patch, or even to fish replacement parts out of their own kits to help a fellow shooter with a broken gun finish a match. They are also openly curious about each other's gear. You seldom find one who has the kind of ego that needs to feel superior or make others feel inferior. The nation's top shooters are very accessible, compared with top competitors in other sports, and I've met any number of national and international champions and even a couple of Olympic gold medalists without even really trying. So go, enjoy, learn, and most important, have fun.
