Is there an existing tech note, article or thread discussing the merits of various powders for straight-wall pistol loads?

Unfortunately the various reloading manuals treat the subject pretty lightly. The various powder manufacturers have brochures available which also give only surface treatment as to the properties and qualities of their products.
One of the best basic guides to powders is in Chapter 6 of Metallic Cartridge Reloading by M. L. McPherson. There is a rumor of a 4th edition in the works but I don’t believe it will be out soon.

That would be a tall order. The last time I counted, I came up with something like 60 different powders that have at least some application in handgun cartridges. Even if I cut that to 30, it would be a long dissertation - and then I'd get guff for leaving out the others.
