Hi folks

I used to live in upstate NY, and my ex-father in law had a nice spread , 200+ acres of open farm land and woods, with several creeks running through it...Was pretty much a city boy, loved to go there with my dogs and hike around.....Got into some target plinking, and finally decided to deer hunt ( shot gun territory, handguns also OK )....
First day of the season, spent the whole day 'still hunting' ( boy were my legs sore the next couple of days !!!)....after lunch, took a nap cradled in the roots of an old oak on the side of a creek....fell asleep, was woken by an 8 point whitetail ( dressed out 185 lbs !!!) snuffling around about 15 feet in from of me....waited until he took 1/4 turn into full profile,
1 slug from my Ithaca 37 ( 12 ga. ) right through the heart...fell right into the creek after taking his last 2 steps....
Boy was my father in law pissed !!!!,,,,,he had been hunting there for many years and never
took anything approaching that beautiful animal....

Tough eating, though !!!!...lot's of stews and chili that winter !!!!

Cheers

Howard

I used to chase the horns, but now a nice fat doe will usually taste better. I won't turn a buck down and even have had a some that weren't tough, but never got a bad doe.

Now that your blooded are you going to go back?

I am with you faucettb. You can wait on that big buck all season or you can Dine Out Early.

Besides being out bowhunting for the wildlife and relaxation I go for horns. I'd rather eat the meat from one of our steers then a deer. far better
