I borrowed a buddies magnetic bore sighter and read the instructions and proceeded to bore sight my rifle. I went to the range and after 4 shots never put a bullet any where on the target. I have never had a problem like this before and in the past have always used a regular bore sighter. I was wondering if any one has had issues with magnetic bore sighters or if there is a trick to using them. I have gone over my rife several times and believe that it is not the issue. The rifle is a new BDL Rem 300 RUM. I usually start sighting in at 50 yds however someone was using the 50 yd range. In the past have always been able to hit the paper at 100 when sighting in. I should note that my buddy had trouble hitting the paper when he used this bore sighter on his own gun. Is this indicative of magnetic bore sighters??

Have both the old and the new Leupold magnetic sighters. Can get fairly close with them for rough sight-in. Always do an actual bore sight when possible. Knock the primer from an empty case, chamber and sight on a distant target (in my case, an outside yard light at 100 yds across the golf course) with the firearm locked in a solid gun cradle. Adjust the scope to the bore, then go to the range and set a target up at 25 yds. Usually just a few clicks of adjustment needed to get dead centered. Move the target out to 100 yds and fine tune for desired height above center.

Most folks try to use a bore sighter and set the target out at 100 yds. WRONG!!!!!!
Use the 25 yd target first and get dead center - then move out to 100 yds.

i had one of the early style leoupold magnetic ones, sometimes it was fine sometimes not even close. i threw it in the trash, it is easier to just do a rough site thru the bore and the scope with the gun on the sandbag.

I have one of the laser bore sighters $39.00 at walmart a few years ago. Its normally very close and has paid for itself many times over.
