I bought a Mod. 94 rifle with a 26 inch barrel. The sight radius is the same distance as a 94 carbine with a peep sight. Do you think I should add a receiver sight to this rifle to give it an even longer sight radius? The front bead has had some flourescent orange color added to it. Thanks for the help.

If you have good eyes you do not need any change in sights. If you are old like me, the peep is a great help because it makes the front sight to target picture come into focus. The peep sight slows me down but the added sharpness is needed so the advantage goes to the aperture sight.

Oh heck, really get back there and use a tang peep. The sight radius on my 26" barrelled rifle is closer to 30":

If I choose to go that route I will have to cover part of the gold engraving, Canadian Centennial.

It is what it is. Leave it alone.

As eyes get older sight upgrades can be a real help. Even moving to firesights is an improvement over standard open sights. They do make a scout adapter that goes on the barrel to mount a Scout scope on those old 94's that makes sighting even easier for us older folks.

I like peep sights, so for that reason alone I'd put on a receiver or tang sight. But it's also a mathematical fact that a longer sight radius means a more precise sighting arrangement. It dosesn't make the rifle more accurate, but it makes the rifle easier to shoot accurately.

This is a photo of a factory custom model 94 built in 1896. Interestingly, the open rear sight is still in place. This makes no sense to me since the tang sight appears to be the primary rear sight.

Two possibilities come to mind. First, although I cannot from the photo, the barrel sight may be a folding sight of some sort. Second, the tang sight could be zeroed for a long enough range that, when used, the sight picture would not be sinificantly interfered with by the forward sight. I've had 2 leverguns to which I added tang sights. On both I left the front sights in place -- folding leaf sights. When I was hunting in close cover, the tang sight was folded in favor of the barrel sight. When longer-range sights were appropriate, the forward sight was folded and the tang raised.

Pisgah has it exactly right. Use the factory irons up close ... the tang sight is for shooting long range. 200 to 1000 yards. I just installed a William's Receiver Sight on my 66 Centennial and removed the buckhorn sight and filled the slot with a blank. On my first 26" barreled '94 I had an old Lyman tang sight installed at the same time I had it rebored to .38-55. Loved that rifle. Ran into hard times and it was the last to go. My current 94 is that '66 Gold Plated Centennial with the 26" barrel. Bought it new in 1966 figuring it would go up in value, as a collector piece. It didn't. In all these years I've never fired it. I have now. Accurate to a fault. So far, with the receiver sight in place, my best 100 yard group is 1.5". Next week I'm heading North for some fun and will try it out at FAR ranges. LOVE those Hornady LeverEvelution loads. I'll never see 60 again so I'm gonna have fun with the rifle come deer season.
