View Full Version : Mag Tube removal
Mod 92 Puma with octagon barrel. Would like to refinish the stock and forearm. Looks like the tube needs to come off first. Thanks

The rifle has the magazine ring dovetailed to bottom of the barrel. Have taken the tube off an exact clone to the '92. Don't know if the Puma is built the same but here goes: Remove the end cap screw that secures the magazine end cap. Remove the magazine end cap and withdraw the magazine spring along with the follower. Drift out the pin securing the magazine tube to the magazine ring. Remove both screws securing the forend cap and slide it towards the muzzle freeing the front end of the forend. Slide the magazine tube forward through the magazine ring and off the rifle. Remove the forend by sliding it forward, downward and off. Reassemble in the reverse order. Easier providing the instructions than actually doing the work so be patient. Best wishes.
Thanks Marshal. Looking at it again this morning, didnt realize the drift pin was holding the tube in place. No wonder I couldnt budge it last night. Figured id better ask before i buggered things up.
Marshal, got any stock stripping methods you prefer?

Rod,
There's a bunch of products that you can use for stock stripping. I have personally used the product that faucettb recommended when I asked the same question a while back since he is a gunsmith. It's called Certistrip and can be purchased from Brownell's and probably from other sources. It's a bit pricey but it works and it's very easy to use. A quart of Certistrip is about all you would need for many rifle stocks. Part #173-100-032 it sells for $31.95. For more information on Certistrip go to the Brownell's site and look up "stock refinishing". Possibly other shooters will recommend other products that are just as effective. Best wishes on your project.

Shes comming along nicely. Will post pics in a day or so.
Im happy with the results, better than the black shoe polish it had on there. Now, a good set of sights would be great. Semi buckhorn with white front bead.

Wyr, I redid the wood. They were very dark. I knew there was some grain under that dark finish somewhere.:)
