I have a bunch of 245 gr lswc boolits that I want to load up to shoot in my 629 and SBH. I loaded a box up with 9 grains of Unique, but would welcome anyone's recommendation for a mild, accurate load with the same bullets and powder.
Thanks

I use 8.0 grs. Unique with 240-250 hard cast LSWC's.Makes about 850 f/s from my SW 29-2 with a 6 1/2" bbl. I'm trying to duplicate a .45 ACP load that I can control double action with good effect on a dangerous adversary rapid fire. It shoots 2" @ 25 yds. from a sand bag rest. I can do chest area hits (most of the time) rapid fire from 8-10 yds.

I have used 6 grains Red Dot with the 240 grain SWC, and it gives me about 900 fps in my 7.5 inch Bisley Blackhawk. Accurate and easy to shoot.

But, I don't have Red Dot ;) I did load another box with HP-38. I'm just looking for a load 1000-1100 fps.

I've used 9 grs. unique to pactice with a lot.I've used 10 grs. of unique and any 240 gr.bullet, jacked or cast quit a bit too, they ain't that hot but they ain't that mild either.Shot them in 3 SBH's,a 29,a 629,and a couple of redhawks and a Marlin 1894.

10 grains of Unique here as well.... very accurate in my 2 1/2" Smith N frame, and my 5 1/2" Ruger, and works well with just about any weight cast bullet. Recoil is "moderate" so it makes a good practice round for stiffer loads, and would also make a good close range personal defense load.

I loaded 100 rounds of 245gr lswcs, 50 with 9 grains of Unique, and 50 with 7.5 grains of HP-38. Both loads were mild, I think the HP-38 was dirtier than the Unique. Loads were more powerful than I thought they would be, but not more powerful than I wanted. My 14 y/o son said "they sound powerful, but they don't kick much". I think I will pursue the Unique loads, and load up/down a grain, looking for the most accurate load with Unique and my Mountain Gun. When I am done, I should have a great all around load that won't wear me or my MG out.
Thanks

What were your results with 9gr of Unique? Have you tried 10gr yet? I plan on trying 10gr of Unique in my SBH. Let me know what you find out.

I shoot 9.0 grains of Titegroup behind a 200 grain jacketed from my 4" ported Taurus. The gun is pretty light (34 oz.) and I find this load almost perfect. I can shoot it easily and its very accurate.

My Taurus Tracker 44 magnum with 3 in barrel give me the following results.
44 Mag 245 gr swc, 8.5 gr HP38 1180 fps (my hunting load)
44 Sp 245 gr swc, 6.5 gr Unique, 750 fps
44 Sp 245 gr swc, 7.0 gr Unique, 850 fps (my everyday load)

So, what charge of Unique will produce approx. 1100 fps from a 4 5/8" SBH?

For years my "medium" load for my S&W 29 and my Super Blackhawk has been 8.5 grains Unique with a 240/245 grains SWC cast bullet.

Makes it easy on the wrist yet has plenty of "ooomph" if necessary.

Well....the Lyman #48 manual lists 12.1grs of Unique behind a 255gr cast bullet as producing 1100fps from a four inch test barrel. That is a MAX load of unique.
The Lyman manual is my first stop when looking for answers about loads.

I've recently been given 2ea. 1 lb cannisters of Unique. But based on this info it might not be the best powder for a midrange load for .44 mag. I believe Marshall has a 1100 fps load with AA#5; maybe around 10g, but don't quote me on that. And it's a "primer specific" recipe requiring Winchester large pistol primers.

Got 1170 fps with 13.5g of Bluedot under a 265gWFNGC. I'll back off to 13g and stick with that. Should be a nice load in the 1894 also.

The 9 grains of Unique shot pretty good at 25 yards.I suspect they're going 950-1000 fps.I haven't loaded 10 grains for this gun.I've used that in all the SBH's I've had though with jacketed, commercial cast, and Lyman 429421 HP's I cast myself. The Lyman's were definitely supersonic at 25 yards out of 7 1/2 inch barreled SBH's.Probably close to 1100 out of the 5 inch SBH I had back then too.Wish I'd never sold that one.

Pasadena, unfortunately.I shot some store bought 240 gr. cast that were loaded in 1990.They were loaded with 231.They shot better than the ones I had loaded with unique.Somewhat cleaner too.

I live in Pearland off of Dixie Farm Road. We're close. I've got some 265 WFNs loaded with 9g of 231 that I like. Meet me at the range and you can try 'em out. I shoot at PSC off of FM 528 between Friendswood and Alvin.

Out of my S&W 329 4' barrel I get 1106 fps using 255 WFNGC, Starline cases, WLP, and 10.0 grs Unique with heavy crimp.

This load allows me to shoot this light weight gun without pain and still maintain enough power to accomplish anything thats needs to be done.

With the same componets and charge weights of;
7.5 grs= 915 fps
8.0 grs= 966 fps
8.5 grs= 1003 fps

Good luck and enjoy.
