What can you guys tell me about a TC HAWKEN? Are they any good , Value , durability...etc...

I just started out in BP Shooting & I picked this one up for $100.00. The gun is being sold by someone going thru a divorce. The gun looks new, & he mounted a scope where the rear sight should be. I would like to put the sight back & get rid of the scope. The only thing missing is the NIPPLE, it looks like these just screw on....can I but these direct from TC.....? Let me know if this is a good buy & a good rifle. I have a Lman Deerstalker(?) which I love because its really short....nice blance. Its a fun hobby!

Like everything else T/C made, those are well made of good strong steel and worth considerably more than $100. Hawken usually had pretty decent wood....the older the rifle, the niceer the wood seemed to be (but that's true of nearly every gun). Can certainly remove the scope, get a set of sights from T/C and a nipple.

Can usually find what you need here as well:

Yeah- this gun is +15years old...... I have a serial number- any way to find out the age?

If that gun looks new, and you want it, buy it at that price for sure. Nipples don't cost much, get a bunch of them.

The T/C factory records were lost in a fire, IIRC, so dating one by the serial number is a bit tricky. There's a few fellows over at the Muzzleloading forum that can give you an educated guess. T/C made a few changes over the years that can put your rifle into a certain era.

You did very well. I found a T/C Hawken flintlock for that price and still have it. All the best...

The serial # on mine reads K25038. I don't know for sure but I think my dad bought it at least 20 years ago. It has a lobo 1 1/2 x scope and a sling. The TC Hawken is the only muzzleloader I know that you can put together completely with replacement and upgrade parts. There's a variety of barrels avaiable or it wouldn't be much trouble to have one made. Obviously they were and still are very popular. Not really a correct copy of a real old time Hawken rifle from the fur trade era tho.

The K in the serial number means it was built from a kit. You can get a sight on ebay. There are a couple of hole spacings for rear sights, depending on when it was made.

I have a T/C 54 cal with a serial number of 15xx. I think it is safe to assume it was from the first year production of them. The quality of finish and wood is still excellent. I bought it new too!

I picked up a pristine 50cal. T/C Hawken from a local gun dealer several years ago for 180.00, still feel like I got a very good deal. If you can get one for 100.00 BUY IT. The values are going up on Hawken guns in original unaltered condition.

I bought a couple of T/C Hawkens off one of the auction sites for $200 each. Both were in very good condition and I consider them a steal. A new one goes for o$670 at Dixie. DO NOT wait on this offer. Sounds like one of them "once in a lifetime" deals.

I picked up an unfired .54 T/C Hawken a couple years back. I took a big white-tail doe last fall with it. No complaints here.
--I'm a rock shooter by choice, but I had to try it out anyway. Nice rifle.
--Can say when I sell, I'll ask a good deal more than $100. You got a good bargain.

Hey guys I'm recent into muzzleloading and have an older TC hawken .50. I was doing some research on what could be loaded into it and it seems the heaviest thing I can find is a .458 535 gr bullet in a sabot. Is this really the heaviest bullet I can fire? does anyone have any experience with it? any load data?
Thanks
Kip

A friend gave me some 470 grain .508 conicals he cast in a Gonic mould, IIRC. They were fairly accurate with 90 grains of Goex FFg, minute of Bambi for sure. Recoil is in the "kills at both ends" category, Gonic is long out of business, AFAIK. I'm casting and shooting a Lyman 508656 395 grain conical now, with better accuracy. Recoil is still plenty, and I think you'll find recoil with a 500+ grain bullet brutal.

Most old T/C Hawkens had a 1:48" twist, which may not be fast enough for a .458 535 grain bullet. Accuracy might be dreadful.

It "might" stabilize with a heavy load but then it would kick badly too. A 54 1/48 will stabilize a maxiball style 530 grain pill (they make a 430 and 530 grain one) but when you set it off with 120 grains a FF it REALLY gets your attention. The larger bore slug is shorter at same weight. Never used a 530 on game but I have no doubt it would be extremely effective on very larger game. Even the 430's are real attention getters when you drop the hammer with a 120 grain load. (which TC "rated" the gun at) That is the only ML I have with a recoil bad on its stock like a modern HiPower rifle. The stock steel butt plate was brutal with heavy loads.

That's a flintlock. Sorry about the confusion. Uses a "rock" instead of a cap.;)
