Well I see this thread is an inferno...:D
So I'm looking for some feed back on used Leupy's.
I can get a VX-I 3-9*40 from a buddy, who doesn't like his. He didn't tighten his rings and scuffed up the tube a bit. This bother anyone??
I figured for $150 what the heck.
Bob, Thoughts??

I do not think an inferno of any kind will erupt.
Leupold makes a fine scope, but for me anyway, are on the pricey side. There are some that say they are worth every penny.
I only own one; a Tactical side focus job that came with a rifle I purchased from a friend. It is surely a quality, superbly made, long life scope.
BUT....I also have the opinion that there are other scopes and clear as Leupold, that cost less.
Nikon, Pentax, and Burris come to mind.
I've just purchased my fourth Nikon, having a Buckmasters 3-10x, a 4x rimfire and a 6x on my 1894 marlin. I've two Burris, both fullfield II, that are super sharp also.
It all comes down to your budget, and what you can afford. Before I had hush money to buy better equipment, bushnell abd Tasco completed the job just as well. The deer are still dead, by the way.... :D
So flames, I think not, but surely there will be others with more "Leupy" experience than I who will be able to shed more light. I'd be interested to hear also, as I'm a big fan of fixed power scopes, which Leupold offers a variety of.

my opinion is stay away from vx1 scopes and any other 'bargain' scopes. far better to spend more and get something with a one piece tube, better lense coatings, and better reticle adjustment and spring system.
i would only use a vx2 on a rimfire.
the vx3 line and fixed, burris signature line, nikon monarch, the one piece weaver are all very good products.
if you figure you'll own and use a scope for the rest of your life, may as well get a good one.

I have three Leupold scopes on two rifles, and another on my 20 gauge Browning Gold slug gun. Leupolds are certainly MUCH BETTER than the scopes imported from China! Redfields & Weavers are good also.

Leupold makes some fine scopes along with many other makers today. I've got one old fixed four power Leupold that I really don't know how old that's turning purple on the outside on a 308 that is excellent.
I wouldn't hesitate to put a used Leupold on any rifle. The really great thing about them is Leupold will fix any scope they make at no charge. I've got a friend that does gun shows and he buys all of them he can get his hands on and then sends any with any problem back to Leupold and they come back like new. He then resells them at a profit.
Bushnell Legends are getting a really good rep for great glass and Nikon seems to be getting a good rep. I have several Weavers and Simmons AETEC's that are excellent scopes. The only down side of Weaver, Simmons and the new Redfields is since Meade Optics bought them from Blount/Alliant (the folks that make powder, RCBS and Speer bullets and CCI primers and bullets) the warrentee has been a real problem for folks.
Frankly I wouldn't hesitate to put any Leupold on a rifle. A few ringmarks won't hurt it and if there is a problem with the scope itself send it in for repair, all it will cost you is postage.

I have eleven Leupolds. Some are 25 years old. None have ever failed. I have tried other brands in the past but no longer because of the lack of durbility with them. Last week a friend dropped my 7MM-08 on a concrete floor at the range. Yes, he is still a friend. We both heard the scope hit the concrete. We put the gun back on the bench to check zero. Nothing had moved. You just can't put a price on a product like that, especially if you invest money in an out of state/country hunt. I am sure there are other good scopes on the market. I can't see myself trying them just to check them out.
I have a passle of Leupolds - all of the older VXII vintage. Don't know much about the newer models other than what the Leupold website and emails tell me. Those I have mounted have been swapped around on various rifles and chamberings. All have held up quite well and I treasure them.

I have many Leupolds from each decade going back to the 1950's. They have all been good. Though I'm not rich, I won't own a scope unless it's at least a middle grade Leupold, Nightforce, or an expensive German/Austrian model. What's right for me may not be right for others though.

was'nt trying to ruffle any feathers or demean Leupold scopes. i have a couple and think they're good, practical products. only saying i don't mind spending more and having the added value of better technology and stouter construction.

I think they are one of the best values out there, and I own 3 of them. I have an old Vari X 11 that my 300 WBY Mag hasn't hurt. I wouldn't be afraid to use that scope on anything. And Bob has a great point that scope is still under warranty.
