Hi all, I am still on the search for the best .338 WinMag factory load and stumbled on a brand named "DoubleTap". I was curious if you guys have heard of, or better yet shot any of these rounds. If so how did they perform? They caught my eye b/c they offer a 300gr load for the .338 WinMag, which is rare.

I haven't used their rifle ammo, but their 40S&W and 10mm ammo is good stuff.

The only bad thing I've read about DoubleTap is that sometimes their published velocities seem to be overrated. It seems that every ammo company does this though, so I just accept it. Almost all my guns seem to shoot slow compared to published factory ballistics.

1895gs,
just had a peek at their website. they certainly use quality bullets and their advertised velocities are in the ballpark with loading data i have. i would say the prices are agreeable as well.
i don't use factory ammo but think they'd be worth a try.
my opinion is 300gr. is too much for the 338 win. mag. that bullet won't make it a legal african dangerous game weapon! just what is it you're wanting to shoot with it?

When you look at the published velocities, read the small print where it will say, "achived with a 26" test barrel" or something like that. But thats ok, neither deer or bear have been known to carry chronographs. Happy huntin

Well the data says from a 24" barrel with a 1-10" rifling, which is what I have. I wouldnt use the .338WinMag for dangerous game, lol. But if legality is based on bullet weights then I dont guess you can use a .375 h&h with its 270gr loads lol.

I have a friend that chrono'ed the Double Tap 250 grain Pation Gold and he got close to the advertised speeds, but in my rifle they were way under the advertised speeds and I have a long barrel on my rifle. These were the first slow factory ammo that I had chrono'ed in this rifle..

Maybe the powders are optimized for a 24" barrel. If yours is a 30" the powders may have burned too fast.

Are you saying the powder is not expanding and pushing on the bullet anymore and therefore is slowing down? The loads in question barely made 2600 FPS....Not good when compared to other ammo from this rifle

Some guns just shoot slower than others, due to differences in barrel and chamber.
No magnum rifle cartridges will lose velocity in a 30" tube compared to a 24" (all else being equal of course). The 30" barrel will always shoot the same or faster than if the same barrel were shortened to 24".

Well that contradicts alot of what I have heard. Once a powder burns completely the bullet has reached its maximum velocity and from that point on should start slowing down right?

The powder can be consumed but that does not mean that their is not high pressure gases still excelerating the bullet as long as it is in the barell (with in reason) and a 30" barrel is well with in reason. The high pressure gases escaping the barrel is what makes the KBoom we hear each time a round is fired. The longer the barrel the lower the escaping pressure is. Max chamber presure in modern rifle cartridges is 65,000 PSI average pressure (max) and the pressure does not zero out before the bullet clears the barrel.

I bought three boxes of their ammo in 35 whelen(2 boxes of 250gr sp and 1 box of 225gr accubonds) and none of it grouped worth a darn. I pulled the bullets on the last 12 250gr sp ,and found them to be loaded with two different types of powder( extruded and ball ). These were all in the same box. That would probably explain some of the poor accuracy. I did not chrony these loads. I also shot a box of nosler custom 225gr partitions during the same session and they grouped very well.

If you have a problem with DoubleTap ammo, send it back. The owner, Mike McNett, has a good reputation for "making things right" with his customers. I can't imagine that he wouldn't want to correct something like two different powders in the same box of ammo.

From what I have heard, the USPS wont allow the return of ammunition due to safety reasons.

Ammo must be shipped ground, if the USPS doesn't allow it then use BIG BROWN (UPS)
