I just picked up a 92 Winchester carbine today. Nice gun, clean. It has a unique marking on the left side of the receiver, just behind the fore arm. It is not a factory mark, but is stamped into the metal; looks more like a brand. It is a vertical line, with a cross about halfway up, and then two "wings" at the very top, making it look somewhat like a "stick" tree. It has a horizontal line at the base, and a shorter horizontal line under that. What is unique is I have a trapper carbine in my possession that I have had for fifteen years that also has that mark. It may be Mexican, lots of the 92's went to Mexico.

Anybody have any idea what it is? Sorry I couldn't post a picture.

Those that went to Australia are probably slated to being manhole covers.

Both of the carbines I have are in 44-40. One is a 'Trapper' with an 18-inch barrel, the other is a standard 20" barreled carbine, but with the gumwood fore-arm. Both date from 1916-1917, and one was definitely out of the country, because it was re-imported by Century Arms. They had no record of where it came from. I assumed Mexico. I guess I have to try Australia now!

By the way, a colleague told me the brand, if it is an Amercian brand, is read as "Rafter Cross over double bar, connected." Thanks for any help, guys!

Just checked in today with Australia. The stock branding system there is based on districts, with each district having specific letter/number combinations. None were similar to the "brand" on these two 92's.:( I'm checking with Texas and New Mexico now. As I said, any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, fivedog. I never thought about South America, but that would be logical. ****, another expanded search! this is getting to be tedious, but fun. I have written Winchester, but no response as of this date.
