Alright.
I've got a vague idea of a decent rifle. i'd know a good scope if i saw it.
But i have no clue about mounts. at all. Any advice? It'll be for a Remington 700 VS-SF II.

Thanks a lot,
_Kar.

I've always like Leupold bases and rings. The windage adjustable standard models for 30-06 and lighter recoiling guns and the dual dovetail for magnum rifles. To tell the truth there are lots of good bases and rings out there. Burris and weaver both work well. I don't see the need to spend big money on rings and bases to get good service from them. All my Remingtons including the 8mm Remington mag have standard Leupold windage adjustable bases and rings except for a model 7 in 308 that has a standard set of Weaver bases and rings. My CZ 527 has Millet windage adjustable rings on CZ's integral bases.

Some folks insist that steel is the only way to go, but I haven't found that so. There are some good aluminum rings and bases as demonstrated by the Weaver's that have been around for ever. Heck even the inexpensive Tasco rings at Walmart work well on aluminum Weaver bases.

All the Leupold rings and bases are steel.

I'm like Bob with the standard bases and rings but I normally buy Millet they are just like the Leupold/Burris/Redfield but cost several dollars less. My 300 WBY is wearing a set of the standard Millet bases/rings and after a few hundred shots no problems.

I used factory installed aluminum bases with a set of steel Burris Zee rings ($23.00). I use locktight blue on the bases, nothing on the rings. I have around 600 rounds through my Mossberg 30-06. The cheap BSA 4-16x40 contender is holding it's zero just fine. This is a light rifle so I get kicked like a mule with the Greek M2 ball. My last group with handloads was .75".

I see many who spend gobs of cash on the finest equipment that money can by. By day's end, my 100 yard groups are just as good as theirs, and I spent 1/15 of what most do. Some folks just like to own the best there is. For me. it is more of a thrill to shoot a nice tight little group with a cheap rifle. The all go "bang" and they all cost money.

Now when I was a cop, thats different. Your life depends on the equipment. I also aint my money buying it. :)
