Does anyone know where I can get a good deal on a rifle. I am looking at getting a .270 but I am looking for a good deal on one. If you have a good link or a place to give me on where to go. I would be very greatful. I live in the DFW area in Tx.

Thanks,

Charley

Sounds kind of trite, but good deals are where you find them. Seem to be plenty of gunstores in the DFW area, lots of pawnshops, and several gunshows held on a regular basis.

If you are going to buy new, consider a Savage. Generally less money than most, and out of the box accuracy is equal or better than most.

Welcome to the forum. Like they say here, the rules are join in and be nice.

Yes the .270 will take pig and like was mentioned, anything in NA if used properly. Concerning where to buy I can't answer that, most of my firearms are bought through a local dealer or from private individuals. Guns shows and classifieds can get you into some wonderful bargins or some real headaches. It pays to know who you're dealing with.

I can't argue against the new Savages or it's lower priced cousin the Stevens. All that I've encountered have shot well out of the box, some bordering on amazing.

Good luck on finding the right rifle.

txsarge, please don't double post

Try gunbroker.com. There's always some good deals on there. Some of the sellers will accept trades as well. But brandwise I would agree with Charlie up there, go for a Savage. Great value and good accuracy right out of the box. Have you tried your local WalMart? They may have a Remington in .270 for a decent price. I have heard some good things about the 710, comes with a scope for around $400 up here in NC. Good luck on your search txsarge.

The best way to get a good price on a rifle is to be patient. Go to all the gun shops, pawn shops and gun shows. Also check the classified pages and/or Shot Gun News, plus ask around at the range. And if you can, take someone along that has experience with rifles. Oh, and bring a notebook so you can keep track of who, has what, for how much.

I am hearing good things about the new Marlin XL7 bolt guns, and they are around $320.

Google "Howa Hogue" and look at those. I suspect they are may be one of the better values out there, especially if you can get an FFL to order what you want for minimum mark-up.

you can generaly find a Stevens (Savage's lower brand) for under 300.00, closer to 250.00 used if you shop around. you would be hard pressed to beat that unless you walk into one of those "fall into your lap type deals". i don't mean to be rude but as far as the remington 710 someone mentioned i would walk away from them. that's just my .02, you would be much better served with a savage/stevens for the same money.

Texsarge, Post #2 kinda covers it " good deals are where you find them". Are you wanting to buy new or used? Are you in a hurry or do you have some time to shop?
Online I would suggest Gunbroker, or Auction Arms, Guns America, check at Buds gun shop, and others.
Figure out what you want or will buy and search these places get prices down, know your product then shop.
Call local guys and ask " how much" call again when you know what the best price out there is and sometimes it certainly pays to get to know a local guy and a few extra dollars spent in his shop will pay dividends and can be cheaper in the long run than the best buy out there.
If used begin hitting all the used gun shops and or pawn shops that carry guns. Hit them on a regular basis. I have bought guns from shops like that I had been in dozens of times and finally fond a deal I wanted.
Guns like anything groceries, cars, and anything we buy pretty much knowing your product and diligent or smart shopping pay off.

Try Davidsons Gallery of Guns (google it). You pick the caliber & make & model, then enter your zip. They'll give you 3 dealers and the exact price. You have to make a deposit (about 1/3) with a credit card. They overnight it and the dealer calls you to come do the paperwork. Lifetime gurantee. I got an 1886 Brownchester for under $1100 (200-400 below gunbroker prices). Matching bright stainless Ruger Vaqueros for my wife for SASS (~800 for the pair). Have Savage, Howa, Remington, etc.

Don't know if you've got a Cabela's or Sportsman's Warehouse around, but they seem to have good pricing structures. I've always found a good deal at gun shops and pawn shops that sell used guns and often these folks will give you a good discount if you order a new gun from them.

Here's a couple of places to look on the net.

Whittaker Guns (http://www.whittakerguns.com/)

GunBroker.com Online Gun Auction (http://www.gunbroker.com/)

Gunsamerica (http://www.gunsamerica.com/newuser.cgi)

Yes, Bob -

There's a big Cabela's store in the DFW area, just north and west of the airport. There's so many gunshops and dealers in the DFW area that it would take weeks to visit them all. As above, get out and look around. Take someone with you that has some basic knowledge of firearms to help if you feel overwhelmed at the prospect.

Then, you should peruse the reloading equipment stuff and learn how to roll your own! :D

I prefer wood, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's better. I'm told that good synthetic is better then wood for accuracy because the weather does not affect it. However, there is both good and bad synthetic out there, so you'd have to figure out which is which.

Qajaq is right good sythentic is good, but most syntheitc isn't good. I prefer laminates myself, good blend of looks and stability. ER Shaw has come out with a new rifle, its basically a savage action, they will chamber it in a rediculous number of calibers and they put it in a Boyds JRS stock. I haven't seen any yet, but I would look at one if saw it. If it were me, I'd get a savage with a wood or laminate stock. Also, don't scrimp on the optics, its better to buy a less expensive gun with good glass than an expensive gun with cheap glass
