Have any of you used bullets similar to the 30-06 Springfield Accelerator 55 grain or maybe a very light handloaded bullet? I am wondering how accurate this light bullet loaded in the 30.06 is? How much powder is in one of these cartridges vs one with a larger bullet like 150 to 180 grain?

Some folks say they are accurate, but I've never seen any of the factory loads that would shoot much better than 6 to 10 inch five shot hundred yard groups. From what I've seen they are simply a waste of time and money.

My experience mirrors Bob's. Although the accerrators shot slightly better than a 5-6 inch groups in my '06 it was far from varmint rifle accuracy. When they first came out i bought a box. Still have it with about 5 rounds missing.

I have not used the '06 accelerators but I have used the .30-30 and they are not accurate at all. I agree with the previous posts in that I think they were a waste of money.

It was the .308's for me. I still have a couple of boxes that went unshot.
My 788 grouped 5 shots in about 4 inches at 50yds(IIRC). I do remember that it was terrible with no two shots being anywhere close to each other.
I also bought some sabot's and tried loading my own 50-60 grainers. These were even less accurate than the factory stuff. It was hard to keep bullet runout even close.
I have never talked to anyone that shot these type of rds thru their weapon with any success whatsoever.
It also probably has something to do with the fact that plastic is slideing your bbl at 3800fps that makes this whole idea FUBAR.
I have a buddy that tried to shoot sabot's(.30cal) thru his .50BMG with even less success. Guess it just ain't ment to be. -----pruhdlr

Several years ago I shot a couple of boxes of 30-30 accelerator ammo in a scoped Marlin 336. They shot pretty well. Not as good as I hoped but groups were under 2 inches at 100 yards. I would speculate that a Winchester 94 would possible do worse because its slower twist (1 in 12 vs Marlins 1 in 10) would not stabilize it as well.

They shoot good in some rifles, lousy in others. A spotlessly clean bore will help them do the best they can in any rifle. I would not recommend any saboted bullet in a light load, as it will increase the possibility of a sabot seperating from the bullet inside the bore creating an obstruction.
Seen the groups shot by others at the gunrange. Most were akin to buckshot groupings at 100 yds.

I would tend to think the the higher the intensity of cartridge (like a 30-06) the more difficult it would be to get consistent accuracy due to pressures, velocity and friction in bore degrading sabot.

I was shooting them in a scoped 336 that is absolutely one of the most accurate, dependable rifles that I have ever seen. I mean I would almost bet my next year's salary on this rifle. That is why I was surprised by the poor performance with the accelerators. They are the only bullet ever fired in the Marlin that did not do well.
