i finally got a scope for my dad's remington 74 (30-06). i went back and forth with the burris and the nikon and finally went with the nikon because of the light and how easy it was to see what i wanted with my glasses in the way.

my question now is for lens covers. anyone have experience with the nikon branded sunshades? do they really do any good in the field?

if i'm going out into the brush lands of central and west texas, i'm thinking i want some nice covers like the butler creek covers. the question i have regarding the covers is, if my scope outside diameter is between sizes is it better i squeeze the smaller one on, or shim the larger size to make it fit?

Ocular and objective bells on most scopes today will be of commone enough diameters that you can easily fit caps onto them without squeezing or shimming. If you look in catalogs such as Cabela's or other supply companies, they usually have listings for appropiate sized covers for the scope you buy. Check them out and buy accordingly.

You can always go online to the manufacturer of the covers and find out what they recommend per scope.
