Big Game? .243?

Anyone fancy a little elephant hunting? I'm sure a .243 would work... .500 NE is obviously overkill :p

PS: Big Game possibly = deer?

I would not feel undergunned hunting whitetail, mule deer, pronghorn, sheep, cariboo, feral and wild hogs, javelina, wolves, and mtn, lion with me 243. If I knew that I was going to meet a 350 pound and smaller black bear, I'd use in on them too. Thing is each year someone take one from 450 - 600 within a 20 mile circle of my hunting grounds. In the 308 model, I'd prolly leave brown bears alone, and not much else in north america.

I did hear that they were buying them from someone else though not sure who.

Seems to me I heard they've bought out Bushmaster -- at least, one of those AR-platform manufacturers. At any rate, I'm sure that in .308 it'd be accurate and appropriate for anything for which the .308 is appropriate -- which is to say, quite a few game animals. Just not my cup of tea, although I will say my little M4 clone is fine as a defense rifle and, with scope, pretty good coyote medicine.

Heck no! All you have to get is an aftermarket 20-30 rd. magazine and you would be just about ready for anything!

I agree, i think there's a problem with people saying that various calibres arn't "tough" enough for various game. I know people that, if i said "can i borrow your 22-250 to shoot a deer?" (little sika deer) they would honestly reply something to the tune of "NO!! that will just bounce off, you simply MUST use this .700 N.E. with explosive sabots..." (:p)

In saying that, i DID just buy a .220 swift, for a job a hornet could technically do. But the swift will do it better. and from further away, and much faster :p . Me and my dad parked the car a while ago to look at some deer about 30 yards away, and he was completely confident of killing one with a .22 WMR at that distance. I think a lot of the problem is that people feel more confident with that extra 0.01" in their hands :p

Sure, I want a rifle that is ugly, akward, and weighs 150% of what it should for its class of cartridges.

I would imagine that DPMS is making them, they are owned by Remington and that's who's making the R-15.

I was thinking of buying a DPMS 260 upper for my LAR, but If I can get the whole thing in 7-08 and Mossy Oak I think I will head that direction.

As for the weight, I have an Encore in 308 that weighs ~4 1/2 lbs complete with scope and it is downright unpleasant to shoot. I think the whole "ultra lightweight" craze is quite overrated. A gun has to be shootable by the shooter so the shooter will shoot it often enough for the shooter to be proficient with it. But then, that is just my opinion :)

I have to agree with you on the weight point Stanger. When I was building guns for sheep hunters in Alaska they were coming out at under six pounds, scoped, loaded and ready to go. Most were 270 Winchester and 280 Remingtons. They were a handful to shoot.

I've got two light rifles now, a Rem Mountain rifle in 280 which weighs just seven pounds loaded and ready to go and a 7 pound model 7 in 308 and I simply don't want a lighter gun.

Those super ultra-lights are not near as stable to shoot, at least for me anyway.

I've carried varmint rifles, '86 Winchesters, and now carry a heavy weight double in 9.3MM and find them fine to shoot. The 33 WCF is a pussycat to shoot and the 9.3X74 isn't bad due to having two barrels for weight. I still want an AR10 variant in .358 Winchester as my 358s usually do a bang flop on game. Trolls don't usually deter me from buying the rifle I want. Bandito

yep, i'd like one in 7/08 too. the 358 is a neat idea too. i'm kinda undecided about the camo finish, it'd be nice if they offered a standard parkerized finish too. i just read somewhere the other day that remington had purchased bushmaster, should be a good pairing.
my only negative thought is that they must be smoking something if they are serious about the $1500 suggested retail.

as far as the purists who badmouth the black rifle for big game hunting, think about all the mausers that were brought home from the war and used for hunting. i guess in my opinion it is about the hunt, i don't personally care what is used for a weapon, if you want to use a spear or ram it with your truck, i don't care. to me the weapon is simply a tool and therefore the induviduals choice.

I would just as soon have a DPMS in 7-08 or SAUM, in all black(jeeeeez,I hate that camo stuff on the Rem's) and for $1500 I could have one.

I'll pass on the Remz. -----pruhdlr EDIT: Just looked at the DPMS catalog and saw that they do not chamber for 7-08. It would be SAUM I guess.
