Found an old Bushnell Banner 4x32 with a flat top post and crosshair. Thinking about putting it on my K98 with cantilever scope mount. Anyone still use this reticle?

You sure don't see them much around anymore. Looked thru a couple at the last gun show I was at. They were still there when the show was over. The duplex reticle has killed most others off. I don't know why it wouldn't work on your 98.

I'm using a post/cross hair Weaver K4 on my 30-30m and like it enough to want a K2.5 or K3 to use in its place. They aren't the best target shooting reticles, that is for sure.

Personally, think the post is easy to use. Do believe it came about as an easy cope for long-time iron sight shooters...that post just looks like the front blade of an iron sight, and you use it pretty much the same way. The post and horizontal crosshair is about the same, but the crosshair makes it a bit easier to hold the scope level.

Fro many years used a Bushnell with a "command post". Bascially it's a crosshair, but could get a post to flip up when you needed it (and flip down when you didn't need it). Soon as I hit the woods, would put the post up; at the range, would flip the post down.....pretty good system, but either too unpopular to continue or too complex to be affordable today.

I've got a Redfield 3-9x40 Widefield with post and crosshair. It's kinda like me, pretty old but functional. I used it for many years with success. It still sit on a Ruger M-77 .270 Win. The post and crosshair are fine, not much different than crosshair or duplex reticles. I agree with Andy that there are better target reticles available.

it works good for deep woods, and closer shots, but you will not get finite accuracy out of the reticule....
Remember to use the x hair, not the point at the top.

I buy up every decent Bushnell ScopeChief Command Post scope that I come across. I use them on shotguns with scope mounts, lever action rifles and bolt actions. I have found 2 1/2X, 4X, 6X and 3-9X and never paid much for them. Not sure of the concern about using of the post for target work. There is no problem getting very tight goups using the post. Post recticle was supposed to appear like iron sights. It's true that this type worked quite well with yesterday's dimmer scopes. I had a Weaver 2.5X like this on an older Remington 141 in 35 Rem many years ago.

Modern Simmons scopes are on the low end of purchase pricing but quality far exceeds optics of TOP of the line Redfield scopes of 40 years ago. Yes, the new scopes are brighter and clearer with better seals, too.

I have a 4x Universal scope from the 1950's mounted on my Marlin .256 Win. Mag. The post is easy to shoot targets with if you make up a black retangle as wide as the post at the distance you are shooting. My scope has a horizontal cross wire which is handy to help prevent canting.

My steel tube Weaver K 2.5 scope has that reticle.I bought it new,back in the late '50's,and had it refinished at El Paso.I still have it;it's on my 12 gauge sluggun.It ideal forquick shots,at fairlyclose range.

Found a K4 post on eBay about Christms.

Is it best to sight her in with the top of the post at a 6 oclock hold OR where the post and crosshair cross at the POA?

If you want one of those scopes check eBay. Posts do command a premium but they are available pretty regularly.

On my 30/40 Krag,I sighted it in with the target sitting atop the post at 100 yards.
With a 150 grainHornady,the horozontal line was POI at 200 yards.
