first outing with the 7mm remington ultra mag today, and when it came to sighting in i was real worried my new thunder stick was gonna sock me in the eye.
not to worry!! the thing jolts less than my tikka 270 wsm(7lb with scope) and is comparable to my kimber montana 7mm08(6lb with scope).
the rifle is a remington 700 sps stainless and weighs 8.5lb with scope, i was shooting the factory 140gr cor lokt ultra bonded rounds.

I think it has something to do with the wide limbsaver recoil pad, brilliant piece of kit!

my only grumble is the 'crap' stock which i am blaming for the horrible groups i shot today. After the first slow 20 rounds and the next 20 to find some kind of zero, i decided to put a halt to proceedings untill i had a new wild dog tactical carbon stock from ozz.
all three shot groups ranged from an awfull 4" down to 2.5" which was the best i got from the whole 40 rounds of factory ammo(thats a huge hole in the pocket as well).

i will be handloading for this(when the dies arrive) but i'm wondering what i can do about the stock in the mean time, it seems almost too flimsy to proberly free float the barrel.

here's a curious thing: 3334fps clean, thats a bit slow??
3310 clean, huh??
3338 :(
3337
*3466 clean, what goes on here:confused:
3414
3442
3437
3431
3436

this was the chrony results from the first 10 shots, remington factory ammo advertised @3425fps with a 24"bbl. any one know why this jump happened? maybe the chrony's broke?, i reckon the barrel just smoothed out. (sorry 'bout the smilies hah!)

It's not remarkable that you got that kind of velocity variation. Factories often test their ammo in closed breach pressure barrels and your mileage may very from posted ballistics.

Your rifle just may not like the bullet you were shooting and that can account for the accuracy. When you can play with different bullets and loads you may find you can fine tune those loads to a better accuracy potential.

Ah what can you do to your rifle to help that out. If it's an HS precision stock you can glass bed and piller bed it if it isn't already. Free floating may help or some pressure on the end of the forearm (usually about 7 pounds) can make a big difference.

The same applies if it's a wood stock.

If it's one of the injection molded stocks then they simply don't respond well to glass bedding. You can tell when you take the stock off their will be bit square holes under the barrel. Free floating is about all you can do to these. If you fill those big square holes up with lead and put a one inch hole in the back of the buttstock they do make a fair anchor. Sorry I just am not fond of Injection molded plastic stocks on firearms.

Synthetic stocks such as the true glass stocks are well made and expensive, but make much better shooting platforms. Personally I like wood and blue steel. That's the price of getting old I guess.

Your right about the velocity coming up as a new barrel shoots in. I usually always lap a new barrel with JB Bore compound. Once the barrel is initially clean I use a worn bore brush wrapped in a patch and do a hundred strokes with it. This usually cleans and polishes a new bore.

For my 7RUM I found that handloading was the only way to go. If you can find factory ammo, it will be expensive and not as accurate. Also, I would get the action blueprinted and bedded. New, from the factory, my gun was way off center. Another thing I found was the heat generated by the cartridge caused it to drift off to the 3 oclock position. After 3 shots, it would lose it's POI. When heated up, the the pattern opened up quite a bit.

yeh, good advice, gonna get it 'accurized' after i've had it bedded on a 'wild dog stock from australia the LA-TA2.
depending on how it shoots after that with handloads, will decide to replace barrel(or shoot it out), and maybe look at the 7mm dakota to be able to seat the high bc bullets nearer the lands.
will post photo when i get it finished.
probably shoulda just brought a nice action like nesika... and built a 7mm dakota from there, but i really wanted to try out the rum and see what all the fuss was about.
