Is the XCR stock any better than the SPS stock on the Remington 700s? Remington should really work out a deal with one of the stock manufacturers to put a better stock on their basic rifles. It is really hurting their accuracy reputation.

I can't tell you about the XCR stock, but the SPS stock is Remingtons $80 buck wonder of injection molded limp as a noodle piece of plastic. The only real plus to it is if your lost in the woods it makes great fires. I agree wholly with you about them putting better stocks on their rifles, but lots of other folks are following their example or perhaps Remington is following other folks example and trying to keep prices out of the stratophere. I'm going to stick to wood myself.

the XCR stock mirror's Bob's description of the SPS stock, good for a signal fire.

Thanks, guys. I have a SPS and the stock is not good at all. However, I must say my '06 does get very good accuracy with the 150 grain loads. I started a thread a few weeks ago about chosing a new 30 caliber magnum and I still haven't made up my mind. I am re-looking at the 300 RUM and re-thinking getting a 700. My thought was if I am going to throw the stock away I can get a SPS model and not spend the money for the XCR, or I could just get it in a CDL. I really like the HS Precision stocks, the Bell and Carlson stocks with the bedding block, and the Boyd's laminates.

the tikka t3 lite has a much better synthetic stock, for less money, and i've yet to see one shoot more than 1.5 inches @100, usually .5-1 inch.
my new remington(see 7mmrum recoil post), i just know, won't shoot any better than 2 inches with the plastic wondercrap excuse for a stock.
would a handfull of fiberglass or carbon and a decent bedding job+free floating break the bank?, i think not, so what the ---- were they thinking??

The problem with bedding those injection molded plastic stocks is the material they use for the stock is a natural release agent and epoxy bedding materials have a terrible time sticking to them. You can still free float them and most often they will deliver acceptable hunting accuracy, i.e. minute of deer.

I had one of the Remington wonder stocks on my M700 muzzle loader and the forend was so limp that just holding it in shooting position would allow it to touch the barrel. It still shot good groups though.

I have to disagree with the characterization of the SPS stock being "limp". It seems fairly stiff to me; cheap, but stiff. While I have experience with only two Rem 700 SPS's, they both shoot amazingly well. It's not a stock to warm up to, like a nice piece of walnut, but for an economy rifle, it's durable and really, really, functional. Mine's a beat-around varminter, where I might be resting it over a rock pile. Not where I want to spend extra $$ only to get beat up. Depends on what you want your rifle for and what you want it to do.

If you want a real laid-up, aluminum bedded stock on a Remington, you can get it. You just have to pay for it. I don't really understand the criticism when both types of stocks are available from Big Green.

Anyway, the only difference between the XCR and the SPS stocks are the molded-in rubber grip panels on the XCR. These stocks are reasonable for an injection molded stock. They can be free-floated and glass bedded (hint - drill and tap).

I'm not very impressed with the stock on my new SPS either. I had to carve quite a bit of plastic out of the fore end to get it to quit touching the barrel. In the new Brownell's Acraglass kit I got, they talk about drilling holes for the epoxy to go through so it can get a purchase on the stock. It seems to work pretty well using it Brownell's way. As soon as I can I'm going to get a grey laminate stock and put on it and make a signal fire with the plastic one.:D.
