Ive had this old S&W .38 since I was a kid, and its never been in working order. I decided a week or two ago Id break it down and see what I needed to get it back going. The double action does work, the action locks tight, ect. The only problem Ive found thuis far is a broken cylinder stop. I havent had much luck finding on, though Numrich lists 2 for this modle. (however both are out of stock) But, even if they were available, Id still be unshure as to which one is right for My Smith, as I dont know if this is a "new modle" or not. How can I tell? Is there a certain serial number block that the "new modle" would fall into or any way to tell by looking? The serial number is 2856XX

here is a pic

I'd probably just order both and see which one looks like your part or works. Keep in mind there usually is some tuning that needs done to make sure your timing is working correctly on these.

Here are some places to look that might help you identify which one you have.

http://www.oldwestgunsmith.com/gunsmith/index.htm This is David Chicoine's site. Probably the best of all there is for old S&W parts.

I'll second alk8944's answer. I was able to pick up a couple parts for my 2nd model S&W from Chicoine that couldn't be found elsewhere.

If you do get it shooting, use low velocity blackpowder rounds.

If you don't get it working, just send it to me & I'll dispose of it for you! :D

:) Thanks alot friends! Ill check these sites out. This was actually the first gun I ever owned. A friend of My fathers gave it to Me to play with when I was 4 years old, when We visited Him at his home, as He had nothing else for Me to play with, and it didnt work. My parents kept it in the gun cabinet and would lemmi handle it from time to time, but now at age 30, I guess Im competent enough to handle it without adult supervision, especially since it still doesnt work. Though I do wish to remedy that soon.

The tuning part I may need to watch for eh... Thanks so much for the tips. VERY much appreciated.
