Hello everyone.

I am new to this forum and was impressed after reading some of the posts with the knowledge you members have.

I just bought 100 of the .431 WLNGC 320gr. boolits for my Ruger SBH. Plan on using W296 21.5gr. with WLP primers. Anyone have any experience with this boolit and load? I also have 2400 powder. I want this load for hunting deer and bear.

Please share any of your loading tips too. Thanks. :)

That ought to work.

That actually sounds like a really good load that should penetrate really well!

I made tons of venison with that load. I think I settled on a little lighter charge. Very accurate. Complete penetration on deer. Great for head shots. Blows up hearts like punctured balloons. No experience on bears, but should do fine on black bears. It's a great load.

Thanks guys. I am waiting for my boolits to arrive (been a week now) and I will let you know how it goes.

Griz: when you say very accurate - what can I expect at say 25, 50 and 100 yds. for a group?

That load goes 1200 fps from a 5 and 1/2 inch Ruger SBH. I could get 3 inch groups at 50 yards, from a good benchrest.

Thanks ironhead7544:

My SBH has the 7.5" barrel so I might get a few more fps out of it. I just found out yesterday when I called Beartooth Bullets that they are 6 weeks behind on orders. I guess I will just have to wait it out to put these loads together and try them.

Do you partial length resize your .44 mag. cases like others have told me they do? They resize them down to the level of the bottom of where the bullet will be seated to. Also which primers do you use? I have CCI LP Mag. and also WLP. Thanks.

I tried that load once out of my BH but the recoil was to much for my arthritic hands. I shot a cylinder full and it took my hands a week to quit bleeding and heal. I unloaded the rest and gave the bullets to my buddy.

I looked up my chrono readings for the 320 WLNGC and my average velocity out of my 10" barrel is 1316 fps. It will be a little lower from a 7-1/2".
I neck size until brass gets hard to chamber, then full length once and start neck sizing again. The brass near the base does grow slowly. I had a few rounds for my .475 the other day that I almost had to stand on to chamber! :D Got some I forgot to full length mixed in so now I have to do all of my brass.
With a good revolver and a boolit that fits the throats decent, I am not sure there is much difference in accuracy between neck and full length brass but it became habit when I shot IHMSA.
Primers are something you have to experiment with to see which groups best. I use Fed 150's in my .44 with 296, 155's will triple group size but other mag primers might not. Just have to shoot them. Each gun is different so just experiment.
My point is to not to get locked into one thing or procedure.

Jodum, I feel for you. My thumbs have pain from arthritis but My favorite gun to shoot is the BFR .475. I am 70 but can shoot it all day with no pain. When I take the .44 down with 330 gr boolits I wonder where the recoil went! I also shoot a Vaquero .45 with a 347 gr boolit. Now that thing will make you sit up and take notice. It is as bad or worse then the .475.

I use the WLP primers. Very low spread on the chrono. I experimented with partial sizing but could see no real difference. Only less force on the handle. I full length size all handgun loads to prevent chambering problems. And use a Lee factory crimp on all but match loads. Magnaporting really works on the Ruger single actions. Cuts the recoil of a 44 down to 357 level. Doesnt seems to work with the DA revolvers. Recoil is the same to me but the muzzle doesnt jump up as much. Just use light loads for practice and heavy for sight in and hunting.

Though I used Starline cases and Federal Mag primers, this is the load I settled on years ago. I got 1230 fps out of a 5 1/2 barrel Ruger and 1295 fps out of my 7 1/2" Bisley. Very accurate. It is fair to say you will be getting optimum big game taking ability out your Super Blackhawk. It really brings out the best of that slow burning powder.

If you find it more load than you want to shoot, switching to 2400 powder is a good idea. I never did it with this bullet but you'll probably give up 100 fps or so and cut the recoil impulse nicely.

Enjoy!

Sorry I missed your question.

I never shot at paper with my 10" SBH. I shot seashells at various distances. I shot pop cans until I knew I could hit it if I saw it. I used a very fine bead front sight and a peep rear sight.

I shot deer from 10 yards to around 75. I head shot quite a few between 40 and 60 yards. I heart shot a few around 80 yards. But I couldn't tell you anything about group size.
