Hey All,
I was wondering what the best cartridge for long range shooting is? (or, knowing this forum, the many best :p)
Also, it has to be something in fairly normal, such as a .308. Things like the 6mm BR, while good, arn't exactly common.
Thanks All,
_Kar.

What are your definitions of "long range" and "the best"? Old standbys such as .308, .30-06, and .270 are fine out to 400 yards or so, as are many others.

"long-range" as in 1000 Yards. Someone mentioned it the other day, sounds interesting. sorry if i didn't specify. And 400 is Still "long" but it's not... sickiningly long :p

EDIT: "The Best" as in "Most Accurate". For Targets, not deer :p

300 Remington Ultra-mag. 3380 fps with a 180 grain boattail bullet.
30-378 Weatherby. 3400 fps with a 180 grain bullet
Those two would be my choice today. I shoot a Remington 8mm magnum with Sierra 220 grain spitzer boattail at 3080 fps. That is a handload. The 30's mentioned above are factory ammo.

It depends on if you want to hunt, or are just looking for a tack-driving paper puncher. If you are just shooting paper 308 Win can work for you, it isn't the flattest shooter, but there is a lot of information about trajectory etc, for the 308. Plus if you don't reload it is easy to get match quality ammo for it. The 260 Rem is also becoming more popular, it is a necked down 308. It can use bullets with higher ballistic coefficiants than the 308 can at midrange velocities, which translates into low recoil and flatter flight.
Of course the 300 magnums and even some of the 338's, like the Lapua magnum will give you a flatter flight, but at the cost of more expensive ammo and higher recoil.

Well the 300 win mag seems pretty common. Cz chooses it exclusivly for their uhr. Moa out to 1000 yards if you do your part. Over in sweeden they think the 6.5 sweede is a good long range round. They have an anual open sight match at a mile with some carl gustav mausers i believe. The 260 rem also has alot of potential.

Break the "sound barrier" as many times as you can. The 45-70 still does well.

I am not sure what you mean by production, but savage chambers their F-class rifle in 6.5-284 Norma, That seems to be one of the hot long range calibers at the moment...

there have been a lot of good choices brought up here, i'd say that for an out of the box, scope it and go rifle the savage in 6.5X284 would be the best bet. the 308 or 300 win mag would also be good choices too. i personally would not overlook the 7mm remington mag either, according to the seirra manual the fbi currently use it as their countersniper round.
i used to rant against the savages because of their attention to detail, not any more, in fact i'm looking to pick up a model 14 american classic in 22/250 one of these days, i plan to set it up as a switch bbl. rig in 22/250 and 250 savage.

You might want to consider the 6.5 creedmore. It's a new round developed by ruger and loaded by hornady and sounds exactly like what you are looking for. I've no personel experience, but I'm considering it myself. http://demigodllc.com/articles/6.5-creedmoor-260-done-right/ capt david
