Iv'e been reading some older posts concerning cost of tumblilng media etc. I have found that conrncob media can be cleaned easily using warm water and Dawn dish washing liquid. ( NOT Anti Bactirial type, most anti-bactirial soaps have a small amount of IODINE in them which attacks brass, copper, stainless steel etc. TRUST me on this one ).
I built a drying rack by forming two wooden frames from 1x2 inch pine boards placed on edge and screwed together at corners. I then stretched aluminum screen wire on them and secured with staples and screen mold to hide staples. Next I placed one frame on top the other and drilled two holes all the way through to pass 1/4" bolts and wing nuts to hold frames together. This makes a framework 12" x 24" x 2" thick.
Put your dirty corncob media in a plastic bucket with warm water and Dawn liquid. Stir around and pour out water ( you can use one of your screens as sift ). Water will be green and very dirty. Then rinse a couple times and put wet media in your drying frame. Place outside in sun or inside. A fan helps drying if inside. Every 12 hours turn the frame and shake a bit to seperate media. After media is dry it's ready to reuse.It will be dust free You will be surprised how well it cleans even untreated...swift 220 or as my friends call me cheapA---

Interesting report and you're to be complimented on your efforts/design...and please understand I have a smile on my face when I say, "but you're friends have a point"......really chuckled when I got to your last line. I'll bet you enjoyed the project and it works, and that's what counts.

I agree. I also kind of experimented and was very suprised at the result. I just put all my media in a good size container, wash and massage the media then pour it in a basket to drain the water then after about 2 hours, put my media in a bin and let it dry outdoor for 2 days. Stir the media every now and then. That's it. IT's ready to use and was very surprise how well it cleaned my brass. I didn't even bother with adding polishing stuff. works really great.

I've been told that simply putting a used dryer sheet in the media when using it has good results.

I recently purchased 6000 rounds ea. of 9mm and 40 SW range brass and 3750 5.56 brass from ex cop friend. I had to find a cheaper way to get all that clean,,,,Am in the market for a larger vibratory cleaner,,,currently have a Lyman 1200.,,,,swift

Someone makes a cheap plastic home owners concrete mixer that sell at: Home Depot, Menards, Lowes??? Not sure where I was it, but it was a black plastic cylinder with spiral indents that sits on a plastic base with a couple of wheels and a motor. I think it was around $50 or so. For mixing concrete it would be a waste, but I bet it would work quite nice for cleaning a large quantity of brass.
I've been using corn cob pet bedding for media with Iosso case polish 8oz. can was $11 and it's mixed 2 table spoons to a pound of media which is $7 for a 20# bag at Petco.

Which type of bedding do you use? I was on the Petco website and the stuff there looks to be pretty course. I am in the process of making a tumbler with 5 gal plastic pail and a 1/10 HP motor with gear reduction but I've read that tumblers are slow,,,swift

Wonder how long it'll be before the anti's get a law passed that you have to show proof of pet ownership in order to buy corncobs?!?! Maybe even sign a book registering the sale!

:mad::rolleyes:

I'll be alright that's what we use in the bottom of my son's cockatiel cage. That's actually how I came up with the idea. Living in Illinois I'm sure it would happen here first.:eek:

One word of caution do not clean the .40 and 9mm together. I did make that mistake once. Fella gave me a 5 gal bucket of mixed pistol brass. I did throw a lot of stuck together cases away.

I read with interest the first post in this thread about washing media for reuse. Does anyone know if this will work for the walnut media just as well as for the corn cob?
