I was out shooting today and I had a few fail to fires. I swung the cylinder out and the primers weren't struck. I thought it may have been a firing pin but then I noticed the cases were struck. The firing pin is falling all over the place.

What causes that? Is it something I can fix or am I off to the gunsmith?

There's a possibility that the hand (the part the pushes the cylinder around between shots) is worn along with the bolt (the part that comes up and locks the cylinder). This is usually the cause of timing problems on a S&W.

I'd either take it to a S&W certified smith or send it to S&W themselves. There may some other worn parts inside that also need to be replaced and working on the timing is not something you want to do if you don't have experience doing this kind of revolver work. The good side of this is Smiths are much easier to time than a colt Python.

Another good repair place for Smiths is Magna-port. They do a lot of Smith and Wesson work.

Thanks. I'll go talk to my local smith tomorrow. I've been pretty pleased with S&W's treatment of me so I may call them too.
