I finally got to fire my 1969 44 mag at our local range. I was surprised at the hard kick it has as compared to my 30-30's, I fired 10 rounds and my shoulder was sore the next day. I fired 240 gr jhp and the accuracy was great at 50yds with the buckhorn sight. I really like this Winnie, to make it more comfortable to shoot I ordered a Limbsaver custom fit recoil pad and will install a Williams peep sight to help these old eyes with a better sight picture. This one's a keeper, my next one will be a 32 spec., a caliber I don't have "yet".

I've got LimbSavers on my two 44 Magnums and they're a delight to shoot. I think you'll be pleased.

the 44 mag & 45 colt are known to do that from a bench. Try shooting them offhand, or sitting, it's appear much softer

Most 44 lever guns are compact and light and can recoil sharply as the 44 packs about twice the wallop or more in a rifle as in a pistol (depending on pistol barrel length) and is a pretty serious round under 100 yards even for big game though a few here tend to think otherwise. Been looking for a lever 41 or 44 myself and will get one when the right one at right price presents itself.

YEP! The .44 Magnum cartridge has a bit more recoil than the .30-30. My own Ruger Model 77/.44 has the same amouint of recoil as a 20 gauge shotgun.

I bought my Winc. 44 mag from an individual locally for 350.00. It's in decent condition and had some light surface rust on parts of the barrel and magazine which cleaned off with some Hoppes. One part of a Winchester not cleaned by many casual owners is the inside of the magazine tube, every used one I bought had light to moderate rust in there. One great thing about Winchester 94's is they all look the same, my wife thinks I only own 2, little does she know how many are in the safe.

A friend of mine has a Winchester trapper in a 44 mag with a barrel around 16 inches long. It is small and light weight and kicks pretty good (not as bad as my 444 but it gets your attention) While I have several Marlins here the next lever gun does not have to be another Marlin. Been even considering a Henry in 44 mag maybe....

I do have 1 Marlin 1894 357 mag with a 2X red dot Truglo. It is sweet to shoot all day long with no sore shoulders. I slotted a 7/8's Williams receiver in order to move the red dot back nearer the hammer where it is more comfortable for me. As much as I like the Marlin I'm still partial to Winchesters, I just like the way they feel in my hand.

Well I have to be honest with you, I nearly bought a 1894 44 mag new over 20 year ago but I did not like the "feel" of it in my hand vs 336's and my old 60 year old model 39 so I know where you are coming from. The feel of a gun is very important to me too. A 357 mag rifle would be pretty sweet to shoot a lot and that thought has crossed my mind more than once too! :)

All this talk of 357 mag rifles has me wanting to go out and look at a few different kinds and see how they feel.

I have an 1894C and its a ball to shoot. I load it with either .360" 158gr or 158gr jacketed so far. Recoil, even with max loads is amazingly light. Recoil and blast with mild cast loads is minimal, like a 22lr. I hope to pick up a .44 carbine one day, the 44 is definitely better for hunting.
