Greetings all.

An offline friend of mine is restoring a Whitney-Kennedy rifle that is missing some small parts including the magazine spring. He's having the missing pieces made in a local machine shop, except for the spring, which we need more info on. Serial number suffix is "m", if that matters. It has a 28 inch bbl, full length tube magazine, and is .40-60 caliber.

Would anyone here have a spare spring to sell, or (more likely I'd guess), be willing to take theirs out and measure it for us? He's willing to have a spring wound or buy one, but to have one made, we need to know:

Wire diameter
Outside diameter
Overall length
Distance from coil to coil (pitch)
Type of ends, (just cut off, or wound flat or ground flat on the ends)

A pic would be nice too.

Thanks much!

I'm not a gunsmith but here is what I would do if the original parts were unable to be located. What you need is a mag spring thats the correct length and of a simular diameter. For instance one from a marlin 38-55 cb. You will need to look at the mag cap and see what style spring it requires, I'd guess either wound flat or ground flat would work. The other end would be determined by the mag plug. You could even make a shorter spring work by using a correct size dowel as a plug and putting it between the spring and the mag cap.

Thanks, coyote. We'll look into that. Would be nice to start off with a correct size spring tho. Might save us a lot of trial and error.

One from the 1895 cowboy will be a closer fit. They have 26 inch barrels instead of the 24 of the 38-55 CB.

Thanks George. We'll look into that.
