View Full Version : Moving to Wyoming!!! (Maybe)
After 20 years (or so) I am retiring from the Army, and if my interview goes well, I could be moving to Wheatland WY to work in a power plant. I hope to move to WY, close to both my Wife's and my families, plus, I am just tired of seeing so many people all the time, LOL. My eyes are wide open, I lived in an area similar both geographically and in population, I grew up just outside a small town in southwestern South Dakota. The very nice HR person told me they have had issues with people who couldn't handle the weather, the boredom or the emptiness there, so my growing up in the mid-west is a plus in her eyes. Anyway, I just thought I would ley you WYO folks know I was coming, lol. If that interview goes poorly I will stay in AL and with any luck work on the new MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle program or stay right where I am at as an Instructor, just change clothes from one day to the next.

Used to hunt in the Larime Mountains just west of Wheatland on a ranch owned by folks that ran the motel/resteraunt in Wheatland. The owner's brother was the local gunsmith. Doesn't take long to get into some fabulous hunting country for deer and antelope from Wheatland.
Yes - the country there is pretty treeless and windswept. My kind of country!

Good luck Andy. Hope it all works out.
Oh, and thanks for helping keep us free. My son started his stint in the Army in January. He's now in Ft Sam Houston learning to be a combat medic.

Well your 175 miles or 2 and 1/2 half hours from the Cabela's at Sidney Nebraska. Not a bad drive on a weekend.
When I was driving truck I got past there a bunch. Lots of speed goats in that country and I saw a dandy mule deer once in a while. I like the small town country living and know what your talking about with to many people. I lived both in Seattle and Phoenix for a while and was sure glad to get back to Idaho.

Wheatland is in the high plains of Wyoming and pretty dry and windy. It is kinda out in the middle of nowhere but close to Cheyenne which is good. Been through there many times and it is going to be a shock getting used to it because unlike Casper to north or Sheridan area it is pretty barren. If that does not concern you, you will be good to go.
Thanks, all.
You mean barren like this? My Folk's driveway, looking North.

Or This? (Limestone Butte, looking North West.)

Andy your going to do just fine in Wyoming. If you get lonely for a tree you drop over to Idaho and I'll take you hunting. Here's where I live.

Hmmmmm, now we know where all the trees from Wyoming went, lol.
The Rockies are gorgeous, my family and I used to drive from Fort Lewis to South Dakota, I remember when they completed the new bridge on I-90 in Idaho, talk about a veiw.

i used to make a run that took me near wheatland. wide open country, interspersed with canyons. i always enjoyed seeing the train moving north and south at the same time as we pulled out of the canyons. saw lots of antelope.

Lots of dead antelopes for road kill too. HD brush guards are popular because on game strikes on road. I knew a guy once that hit a moose in Idaho near MY border and darn near killed him. He was laid up for almost 6 months. My favorite part of WY is Sheridan area as it is green and lush compared to other parts of state and two hours from great shopping in Billings; MT. I remember one morning there in late 80's it was a beautifull summer morning cool and crips and as I watched a hot air ballon rise in distance I saw a C119 take off on a freight run. It was like going back in time a bit. (the still had a active C119 parked at airport there in 99) Casper is nice too because while it is barren south, east and north of town in is on Platte River and it is lush around it and just west of town is casper mountain which rises up 3000 feet about floor of valley to 8000 ft plus and is a big lush plateau with a thick forrest and mild temps even in summer and snow can be found up there at least 6 months a year too but 30 minute drive or less from town.
