View Full Version : Question about the saftey on a model 94AE
I was looking at a model 94 AE in a gun shop yesterday. I am curious about the safety. The gun had a rebounding hammer but i don't recall seeing either a top tang safety or a cross-bolt safety. Could this be possible?
The gun shop owner seemed to think the "safe" position was leaving the hammer in the forward position. There was no half cock position. As you can see i am not overly familiar with the model 94. I am used to a lever gun having a half cock safety.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rob
P.S.The price was $250. I thought it was a good price for a gun that seemed to be in great shape.
Hi Rob,
The first 94AE had no safety, the rebounding hammer was the safety. Then came the cross bolt. Then the tang safety.

I don't know if it qualifies as a "safety", but on my late-80s Model 94AE the lever must be squeezed fully closed to depress a small release for the trigger.
Thanks for clearing up my confusion about that 94AE. Several searches on the internet did not answer my question but Russ answered it in three sentences!
The one I was looking at does have that same trigger release as well. How do you like your late 80s model 94? Do you have a scope on it?

Love my '80's 94. I bought it the day after the 94 was discontinued, $200, and have not regretted it one minute. I switched out the rear sight for a Marble's folding leaf sight, an added a Taurus folding tang sight for longer range shooting. Sweet shooter.

Rob,
I think your question was for rwb, but my Model 94 AE has a 4x32 Bushnell "Sportsman" scope mounted on it. It also has a laminated factory stock that was offered only briefly by Winchester in the late 80s (marketed as "Wintuff"). The appearance is visually unique, and strikingly distinct from the classic walnut stock (or I believe birch on later Ranger models).

.
The rebounding hammer started appearing on the 94 in about 1984 or so, but the cross bolt safety didn't come along until about 1991. The very first cross bolt safety gun was serial number 6000000.

You got a good deal.
The rebounding hammer appeared in 1981, the cross-bolt in very late 1991 or early '92

The rebounding hammer did NOT appear on standard production guns in 1981. That did not occur until 1983. In fact, serial number 5114821 does not have a rebounding hammer and serial number 5115679 does have a rebounding hammer. Can we say that somewhere in that 858 guns that the transition took place? I know this because I have both guns.
