This is the best personal defense load in the 44 Mag IMHO. This load is a very soft lead with a thin jacket that opens extremely wide and does not over penetrate, ofton penetrates less than 230 grain FMJ 45 ACP. This bullet leave a very large wound channel in Deer.

jwp, is it my imagination, or is factory ammo for the .44 mag a bit on the anemic side? Aside from the Remington ammo, nothing exceeded 1,300 fps.......

The Remington 240 SJHP.
I posted this infomation on 24 Hour Campfire as well and this one of the responses that I recieved.
The responce is refering to the Rem 240 grain SJHP as a self defense load.

Back about 1980 a friend of mine with Dallas PD shot a guy at about 15' with this load from a S&W 6.5" barreled nickeled gun. The guy turned and fired at my friend and his partner as they approached a group of men on a "man with a gun" call in West Dallas.
The BG missed and my friend, who was about 5'8" 175 and an ex-high school weightlifter/football player, put three rounds into the guy before he hit the ground. The rounds were knocking the guy over backwards and the third round entered at an angle from diaphragm up toward the shoulder blade. All three rounds expanded perfectly and were found under the skin at the far side of the shot...
These were the original scalloped jactet 240 grain HPs...

Good information....would never have expected the .44 mag, particularly at 1300+ fps, to not be a serious risk for over penetration. I carry a .44 mag, 5" S&W frequently and use .44 special for reduced penetration, but will look for the Remington mag. load next time I'm in the shop or ordering from Midwest.
Thaks,
Dan
