I will have my Dillon SDB this week. I have 2,000 CCI large pistol primers that I was using in my RCBS press loading for 45 ACP. I have read several conflicting reports on CCI primers in Dillon presses, so I was thinking of hand priming my cases to use them up, and skip this step in the Dillon press, is this OK. I already have 300 sized and primed now. What is the scoop on CCI primers in Dillon presses, OK or not?

thanks

I haven't had any trouble. I've got a 550b though.

I have used them for many years in a Dillon 550B without incident.

I had trouble getting CCI's to seat fully in mine, but my SD is over 15 years old at this point and they may have tweaked the design since then? For that matter, the CCI primers I had the trouble with were already five years old or so when I got the press, so they may have changed a little in the interim, too? If you want to use hand primed rounds in the SD, you just pull out the brass pin at the powder station that keeps cases from flying out during indexing, and insert the cases aat that position instead of at the resizing and decapping station. Otherwise, operate normally.

Seems I only have occasional trouble with primers seating fully. Although I use mostly CCI primers, I thought I had narrowed my probs down to being Winchester brass related instead of the primers. I do know that it is not press specific as I can duplicate it on several presses / priming tools. I have had some brass that I can hardly prime with hand primers & have broken 1 link in a Lee hand primer with them. I have also found running the suspect cases through a primer pocket uniformer causes the prob to go away so I'm pretty confident my issues were not primer related. The CCIs do seem to have thicker cups which likely exacerbate a tight pocket situation.

I went solely to Winchester in my 550B because of problems with CCI. But, that was about 9 years ago. No idea what would happen today. I don't plan on finding out, either, as I love Win primers.

I've never run anything but CCI primers thrue my 550B, the ONLY problems I've encountered were changing from the large to small slide, the punches are in slightly different positions so they take some tinkering to get the stop set correctly for the other, I did catch a few and not get them in the pocket until I figured out the problem, I guess they are not as soft as some of the other primers, some seem to take a little more force to seat all the way but I believe that it's the individual shell in that instance?

The only problems I had with CCI primers with my Dillion was with military brass ,don't remember if that was large or small rifle or both. That was over 20 years ago & quit using CCI primers till this year, not having any problems with CCI primers in my Dillion w/ RP,Starline or WW brass. The hard seating was after reaming or swaging the primer pocket & was not a problem with Federal or Winchester primers

I have been using the square deal b for about 10 years now, and use mostly CCI primers in it . I never had a problem with it

I use them regularly in my Dillon Super 1050s. No Problem!
Dillon advises not to use Federal primers (call them), but I've never had a problem with Federal either.
