Got a bunch of these today given to me, and am trying to find some data for them and would like to keep them between 800 and 1100 fps.

These are not gas checked BTW.

Just a real nice 290-gr SWC .431 Dia bullet

The firearm that will be used is a Ruger SBH SS 4 5/8ths barrel.

Well I'm gonna respond to my own post as ....I found this article that lists 290gr. bullet with Unique:

Someone else post that start with 9.0 to 10.0 and it should be fine.

Pressure in the revolver will depend how deeply you seat the bullet, so a starting powder charge can't really be given until you say how far it is from the base to the crimp groove? unique should be good. Try substituting Hodgdon Clays if you want something that burns cleaner and meters more easily. The substitution is just about grain for grain.

I'd use starting load data for the 300-310 grain lead/cast bullets. My new Lee manual suggests starting with 12.4 grains of 2400, 9.7 grains of Blue Dot, 7.2 grains of Herco, 6.2 grains of Bullseye, 6.6 grains of Unique, 5.7 grains of Green Dot or 5.3 grains of Red Dot. These are all for 300-310 grain bullets so should prove save with a 290 grain cast.

My starting data load for the 290-gr SWC (Keith style)

1) 13.5 gr of 2400 - Fed 155 LMPP - This load had moderat recoil and was very accurate.

2) 15.5 gr of 2400 - Fed 155 LMPP - This load had alot more felt recoil, but was very accurate as well.

I will be working on a few others, increasing powder charge, and then settling to see what penetrates the best with managable recoil.

Went back up to my uncles and with (5) 5 gallon jugs of water with plywood between #1 and #2 - Jugs #2 - #4 just water, then between #4 and #5 another sheet of plywood.

Test Load: 290-gr SWC Keith Style, 16.5 gr of 2400, Fed 155 LMPP

Test Distance To Target: 20 feet

<!-- m -->http://youtube.com/watch?v=yCfI7fquGyY<!-- m -->

The outcome was that I had penetration up to the 2nd sheet of CBM plywood which is a total of 4', as the bullet struck the wood sideways of the 2nd sheet of CBM plywood, and bounced which I recovered. The over all shape of the bullet was un-deformed other than rifling marks from the barrel.

Since this test was done, I picked up an F1 Chrony at Sportsman's Warehouse for $99.00 while down in Missoula, Mt the other day. And today while back at home I picked up a Franklord Arsenal 750 gr scale for $31.99 at our local Sportsman's Ski Haus. I also found H110 powder for $16.99 a pound and CCI #300 LPP for $2.49 a 100.

Well the H110 powder is not for the 290-gr SWC but for a bullet from my sponsor that is a 305-gr WFN GC that I am working with as well.

Now I can really tell just what FPS I am getting with my loads, and that the 16.5 grs of 2400 will be a great load, but I will re-run thru the new F1 Chrony to see.
