I am loading a 250gr.WFN hard cast bullet(.44mag cases, special loads or mag) using 7gr. of Red Dot and CCI 3ooprimers. I am shooting this in a Tracker44(34oz.) with a 4in. barrel and porting. The Lee manual says that's good for about 1000fps. Well, that will make a nice bear protection or short range deer load, but for having fun and punchin' paper I prefer a little less ...authority on my end. I can just decrease the powder until it is easy to shoot. I would like to get maybe 750-800fps. Can y'all give me a guess on grains of powder to get this velocity. A chrony is still a dream.

That should make an excellent bear and deer load. I'd go down to 5 or 5.5 grains for a low level load. I'm shooting a Tracker 41 mag 4 inch and load to 800-850 fps for a plinking load, but I'm using Tightgroup powder. I sure enjoy the plinking loads in my light tracker, but wear ear plugs. My ported 41 mag is really loud.

if you are not limited to red dot, 12.5 grs of 2400 in 44 special case will put you close.when you want to experiment more look at blue dot

Agree. RedDot isn't the ideal powder for that heavy load usage. It will work, but isn't ideal. What it IS ideal for is the lower powered load you seek. Try the suggest 5.0 to 5.5 grains and be happy.

For your bear-stomper, I'd look at BlueDot, LilGun, 2400 or 4227. For most reloaders, I recommend the 4227: you can't get a double charge in a case, it is very consistent (but does leave some unburnt kernels behind) and will give you right at 1000 fps. Almost all manuals list loads for most of the powders I mentioned. Do use a magnum primer for 4227, but standard for all the others.

I have 2400 and H110 at hand. Can yopu give me a start amount? I am looking for abo0ut 900 to 1000 for a bear stopper-close deer load.

Thanks for your input, I REALLY appreciate it. A nice little Red Dot load for plinking and 'coons , and a "STOMP YOUR BUTT" load of 2400 or H110 for "dem bears". Thanks guys(or girlys)
