I do some night fishing from the shore and always wondered about bringing a coyote call and trying to get one into shooting range. I called the game commision and they said that it was no problem and it can be done. Id like to bring something small and light maybe that i could put in a day pack like a taurus traker in 17 HMR. Just wondering if anyone had any better gun or sighting ideas. Im considering a reflex sight but i dont know if it will work in dark. Id like a pistol for consealment so i dont scare people on the walk to the lake. Thanks for any input.

Ruger Single Six .@@ LR/.@@ WMR. Thet come in varying barrel lenghts so you can get one that fits your needs. The Single Six is worth twice what the retail price is. It's a really good Quality Single Action revolver.

Jumbo you might go over here and do a search on night hunting. Lots of folks on this forum night hunt for coyotes and may have some good ideas for you. I've never done any night hunting so can't help you out there.

I'd discourage a 17HMR on coyote, and doubly so with a handgun. There simply isn't enough oomph there to do the job unless you can get one to hold still while you insert the muzzle into his ear.
In the same size package, you can carry a 357 Mag. Either SA or DA will be fine, as you'll only get one shot off anyway before the coyote is gone - one way or another!
I personally use 158 JHPs, but an argument might be made for bullets as light as 125s. Just load up what you'd carry for two-legged coyotes and that'll do on the quadruped kind just fine.

Used to do that myself however your choice of weapons leaves a lot to be desired as a coyote gun also if you use a wounded animal call you might also pick up a wolf or so, used a 357 myself ,they can jump on you before you even know what happened.

I'd definetly go for a .357 Mag, preferably a 4" Ruger GP100. I've shot coyotes with a .22, and I really don't recommend it. I normally shoot them with a .25/06 or a .204 Ruger.

Concur...I carry a .357 but I load it to +P .38
Special...use 158 Keith bullets. This allows me to shoot enough to be effective with it.....try the baby puppies call...it is like dinner bell to them....watch your back

Add me to the .357 Magnum list. A medium frame with adjustable sight and 4-6" barrel. S&W 686 would be about right. "Small and light" is not my idea of a handgun for critters with teeth and the saavy to stalk you. Also, you can forget about "don't scare people on the walk to the lake", you will scare somebody someday I assure you once you bring your handgun out so that's a secondary concern on what to pack. Just my take on this, YMMV.
