I'm looking for a good lead bullet load, for my Marlin 336, with micro groove barrel. I saw one in load swap for a 175 gr FN FB no gas check pushed to 2089fps. The man made the bullet himself, so I'm wondering, did it lead up the barrel at that speed?? I want to shoot deer and hogs in the heavy timber here in western Pa where I live. A 100 yard shot would be a long shot where we hunt. It's usually 50 feet out to maybe 75yds and it happens fast. I looked at Bear Tooth bullets and one says it doesn't shot very accuratly in micro barrels, and I can't get them to answer me, if the 170 they have will work through a Marlin action?? So my friends can you give me some loads that should give me what I'm looking for. Thank you all very much!!!

I don't know where you heard that, but Marshall makes some of the best bullets I have used and they work just great in the Micro-Groove Marlins I own.

2300fps in my .35 Rem, for example, and kill critters like poison.

The 30-30 loads are on my 'to do' list so I'm afraid I can't give specific loads. Why don't you call Marshall and get his recommendation?

My personal favorite hunting load for the 30/30 has a1700 grain Lyman#311041 bullet,30.0 grains IMR#3031 powder.Current manuals rate this as too hot.t works fine in my Win'94,but be very careful working up your load.

I use the same load only with a 160 gr Lee g/c bullet. Shoot it from a Handi-Rifle.

I read it on BearTooth Bullets web site looking at their 308 cal, for 30-30 bullets. They list the lead bullets they sell for the 30-30, and it says beside the 160gr, does not shoot accurately in micro groove barrels. So I looked at the next one down, the 170gr, but it looks too long to work through the Marlin action. I really don't know, so I e-mailed Beartooth to ask about it, they never answered back. The fast load was listed on Load Swap from a gentlemen from Louisiana. He never mentioned anything about leading, but that seem to be real fast compared to all the other loads I've been finding. I wondered about leading at that speed.

Micro-Groove barrels are iffy with cast bullets mostly because the shallow grooves have a hard time getting a grip on that slippery lead. Most successful loads (and I don't own such a gun, so I cannot confirm it) use bullets that are a bit hard and oversize, I believe.

Most commercial-cast bullets are much harder than required anyway, so as long as they are fat enough they should be acceptable. If the usual .309" isn't good enough, shop for bullets that are sized to .310 or even .311".

My favorite 30-30 powder for cast bullets is Accurate 5744. Their "book" suggested loads worked great for me from the first trial in a standard-grooved rifle.

Frank Brother, thats one heck of a 30-30 you got there, and you are one tough dude. 1700grain bullet huh. Yeah I know it's a misprint. But it was good for a chuckle. Thank you for the load.:p

Yeah, that was no mistake;but they don't make IMR 3031 like they used to.

Education me on that statement, whats different about it. I've basically use BLC2, with all of my jacketed 30-30 loads. Even with the Barnes bullet for 30-30. It gives me all the accuracy I need for hunting and then some. I'll have to look and see if there's any cast loads for it.

That's for the 155gr. bullet, not the 160gr. bullet. Guessing the 155 is more of a bore-ride design, based on the types of rifles listed. Note that the 160gr. bullet listing on www.beartoothbullets.com (http://www.beartoothbullets.com) and it says, "Great Bullet for 30-30."

Order them sized 0.310" for your Marlin. Better yet, pick up the phone and call Marshall. His toll-free number is listed on the site.

You'll have to forgive me for not getting that, I have the problem Carlos Mencia describes, you know he calls it DOO-TA-DOO when folks do dumb stuff. Got it bad my brother.

As noted the Lyman #311041 is an excellent 170 grn mold. It was designed for the 30-30 Winchester. If you're looking at getting over 2,000 fps with bullets in this weight range it will be difficult (without horrific leading) without gas checks. RL-7 is my favorite powder for full power loads with cast bullets in the 30-30. 26.5 grns will produce over 2,000 fps with either 150 or 170 grn gas checked bullets. Lyman recommends up to 28.6 grns with the 311041. Most of my shooting was with a Model 94 Winchester. I've never tried them through a Marlin with MG rifling. I never popped a big game animal with the 26.5 grn load but believe it would have plenty of penetration. I used to test my loads on some old car bodies dumped in the desert out of town. The above loads would penetrate even the thicker, heavy gauge metal on the older car bumpers with the greatest of ease. Good luck with your quest and God bless...
