So what are the options? It appears to me that the only options are 1911 style handguns and glocks everybody else makes 40dy or smaller caliber for copmact pistols? Is my observaton true or am I am i Missing something? What I mean by compact is sub 4 inch barrel

Why choice to make a bad choice worse? By shortening the bbl to less than 4 ins you lower the velocity of the already to slow bullet!!!

Khar seems to be a leader in the niche you are talking about. Very good pistols from reports I have seen. They have a few models in various configs with barrels in the range you are considering. Well worth a look for what you are wanting.

I've had no experience of micro-size .45s of more modern design, but I have had three 1911-based micros, two Springfileds and a Kimber. My conclusion was that even in a high-quality gun, going that small in a 1911 is an invitation to unreliability. Some may be reliable, but these three examples were definitely not.
I feel a lot more comfortable with a "Commander-size" gun, be it 9mm or .45.

Well I think the Glock 30 is probably going to be the gun. The Barrel is 3.8 inches. What I should have said was compariable to the size of the Glock 30.

My favorite from the little shooting of the micros I've done is the Para Ordance LDA compact.

You should be happy with that. Glocks are great shooters. I have the yet smaller version, the model 36. It just drops in to my pocket when I want it. Reliable, it has never not worked- and I shoot it frequently.
