Don't give up...but ddon't think you are anywhere need being finished either. The best way to cartridge collect is to specailize...and narrowing the field to just 30-30's is a good move. Started with "old cartridges"...narrowed that to "US Pistol/Revovler cartridges"...as that got to be a massive amount, narrowed it farther to "US made revolver cartridges"..still had hundreds of single cartridges and was always looking for the rarer versions. You'll be surprized at how may 30-30 makers there have been.
Going to have a pretty big collection if you try to bag a box from every maker who has ever marketed 30-30's in the last 113 years....a lot of those makers have been gone for a long-long time. Have some European makers as well (and sometimes marketed as the 7,62X51R and used in a few combination guns). Then you have the re-named ammo for the big chain stores in the 1950's...Revelation, Ted Williams, etc.
-----
basically, cartridge collection never has an end...it's like any other hobby, something that last as long as you care to let it.

Cartridge collecting is a great hobby. Specializing is very good advice. I collect small game cartridges and .in particular .25-20 and .32-20’s. Lots of variations to look for.
Along the way I started collecting .38 Specials too. I have several hundred and only have a rather small “representative” collection of .38 Specials.
For .30-30 advice look for posts by John Kort. He wrote a nice history piece for the board.

You picked a pretty good cartridge to collect for !
I take it you so far have just picked up recent manufacture ammo ?
Wait until you start looking into old and no longer made ammo just for the 30-30 !
Go on Gubroker and AuctionArms and look in the ammo or collecter ammo sections , you may be slightly surprised at some of the stuff available !

Dont overlook the commemorative boxes, I believe John Wayne is out now, the 100 year boxes are still around at gun shows and get the Ballistic Silver Tip and Hornady LeveRevolution while you are able to get early boxes. The bxes will change over time.

About ten years ago I was at the Pony express station on the south side of Dugway Proving Grounds wandering around and I picked up a very old .30WCF empty in a wash. No telling what that old shell could tell.

Have you ever seen any 30 American made by Federal? It's 30-30 ammo that uses a small rifle primer rather than the large rifle primer.

carner,
Welcome to the world of cartridge collecting! I can tell you that it can be addictive! I started with .30 W.C.F. / .30-30, then .44 W.C.F. / .44-40, then .45-70, then .25-20, then .32 W.C.F. / .32-20.....ect., ect.
John Witzel has the most extensive .30 W.C.F. / .30-30 cartridge and box collection that I know of.....500+ specimens! Here are a few older .30 W.C.F. / .30-30 cartridges from his collection:

Hi John,
I believe that I have duplicates of those and they make a most interesting display. Thank you for posting them for our enjoyment. I collect the 30 WCF/30-30 as you gentlemen do and I also collect .22 rimfire boxes but the Winchester/Western brand only. There are hundreds, the 1940s-50s box that is blue and yellow with red lettering for example has over 250 known variants. I have 28 variations of the Wildcat box and there are most likely others. I have a picture of a very rare modern 22 rimfire box on my webb page. Go to Jbledsoe.com and see a box that opens from the side as opposed to opening at the end.
As you said, it is endless!

JBledsoe,
Interesting box! I have never seen that variation. I have a modest collection of .22 boxes starting from about 1940 to present. Have you ever seen what some of the rarer .22 boxes are selling for at Wards Collectibles? Their recent auction had a Winchester Junior Rifle Corps. box that sold for.......$5,600!!!!
https://www.wardscollectibles.com/viewitem.php?item=2014
here's a few other high priced .22 boxes

https://www.wardscollectibles.com/viewitem.php?item=2159
It's amazing on how many variations of .22 boxes there are! THere were 422 of them in the latest Ward's auction.
Back to the .30 W.C.F. / .30-30
Here's the highest $ selling .30-30 box I have ever seen. It's REM-UMC Train box. I have one like it but it is only in fair condition and is missing 10 rounds.
https://www.wardscollectibles.com/viewitem.php?item=2673
At least I can save the pictures! ;)
Interestingly, there are many .30 W.C.F. / .30-30 variations. The latest one that I found about was the canadian loaded .30-30 "Sealing" cartridge. It was produced for a few short years in the late 1950's. I found 2 cartridges at a cartridge collector and dissected one of them. It contained 9.2 grs. of smokeless powder and a 180 gr. plain based lead bullet. I chronographed 1 of the rounds and it developed 1,280 f.p.s.
Here's a pic:

Here's a pic of the box sent to me by John Witzel.

John,
Sorry, I don't understand what is meant by "Sealing". Is that the way it's made, it's intended purpose, or action performed on game (seals it fate)??
.
Jack Monteith

This is just my guess. The sealing load was made for the east coast & Newfoundland seal hunt, or for keeping seals from raiding the fishermen's nets.

JBledsoe,
As Jack Montieth indicated, it was intended for seals. Apparently CIL felt that the standard .30-30 round was overkill.
Another interesting .30-30 variation is the rare "Trapper" cartridge that was loaded by PETERS back in the 1940's or so. John Witzel thinks that it was special loaded for either the Hudson Bay Co. or T. Eaton Co. in Canada. He new of a trapper many years ago that used these cartridges.
It was loaded with a full patch .30 Mauser bullet.

carner,
These are the choices for .308" pistol bullets.
http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/BrowseProducts.aspx?t=82579&pageNum=0&tabId=19&categoryId=9203&categoryString=652***19785***9015***
I have used the Hornady 90 gr. XTP and they shot very well in the .30-30.
18 grs. of 4759 or 4227 goes 2,000 f.p.s.
8 grs. of 231, Unique or Hodgdon's Universal = 1,500 f.p.s.
I have also used RL7 to push this bullet to a bit over 3,000 f.p.s. with good accuracy from a 26" .30-30 barrel.:D
Have fun!

carner,
Regarding the .30 W.C.F. headstamp, if you can find an 1894-1994 Centennial box (only made in 1994) the cartridges have the .30 W.C.F.
headstamp.
http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=104699374
Also, here's a box up for bid on gunbroker with various older .30 W.C.F. and .30-30 cartridges. Scroll to the bottom to see some of the cartridges.. They are in a box marked .32-40, but they are .30 W.C.F. / .30-30.

I may be unique here, but I use 30-30 ammo to collect deer and hogs. Here is just a small sampling of what I have collected.
