View Full Version : Winchester M.92 Markings (Weird)

I'm still researching some markings that I have on two M.92 carbines, both in 44-40. One was a 'trapper' made in 1906, the other a standard carbine, made in 1916. Both guns have a similar marking on the left side of the receiver, just behind the forearm. If it were a cattle brand, it would be read as
"Rafter-Cross over two bars, connected". Essentially, the mark is an upside down "V" over a cross, which is connected to two lines under the cross by the vertical leg of the cross. I have searched the cattle brand records for Utah, Oregon, Nevada, California and Arizona with no luck. Both New Mexico and Texas register brands by county, and I'm only about a third of the way through. The markings might be Mexican, since the 1906 gun was re-imported into the US in the 1969-72 era by Century International. Anybody else seen this mark?

Thanks!
