:cool:I used a 16 Remington 870 for several years because it was left to me by my dad. It had a poly-choke and it was a bird getter!!:)
I gave it to my eldest son, and now my grandsons are useing it.

I use several 16 gauge shotguns for small game and upland hunting. Ammo is easy to find around here. All the best...

I got a 16ga Model 37 Ithaca made in the 60's with a plain "mod" BBL that was built on its own size frame, which made it much lighter and "livelier" than any 12ga on the market "then or now". I later added a "Deer Slayer" BBL and a vented "IC" BBL. I also have a "Drilling" with the top two barrels that are in 16ga. I think of the 16ga as the "30/06 of shotguns"; it does everything well. It's a shame the "ammo makers" abandon it years ago when the 20ga 3" magnum came into "vogue". I understand the 16ga is still popular in Europe.

I wish I could find 16 gauge ammo around here for my '97 Winchester without ordering it in. I am getting pretty close to the end of the last case I ordered for it. The gun s/n shows that it was made in 1910 so I had a gunsmith look at it. He told me not to use anything over 2 1/2 dram which is really hard to find.

9 times out of 10 I hunt upland with my 16gauge.
It is arguably my favorite shotgun load, and I'm up to 3 sisxteens now.

A Stevens 530a, single trigger SxS, with mod/full bbls.
A Remington model 1148, which the barrel is currently at Briley, where they are installing their thin wall chokes. This gun was a full choker, not very versitile, but nice just the same.
and my sweet Winnie model 12, which could be the very best shotgun I own.

as far as shells, I order them for the bigger companies, and eventually will reload them, as I'm up to my elbows in hulls right now.

The 16 will do anything the 12 or 20 will do upland or waterfowl wise....just kinda hard to find steelshot in 16.

Kansas, Wal-Mart in my area usually has "promotional" 16ga ammo during "dove" season, as well as Bass Pro. Getting "heavier" game loads are usually harder to find. You might go "online" with one of the "discount" houses.

Thanks for the heads up Riley, I am always keeping an eye out, but around here, the only thing I see is 12, 20, and maybe .410. When I got the first case of 16 gauge shells, I had to order them in. And even then, 2 1/2 dram eq. shells are few and far in between.

Did U try going to Cabelas or Bass pro or a big outfit as such? I hit the cabelas in Hamburg, PA [2 1/2 hr ride] but stock up due to the better pricing.

My first pump gun was a Win 1300 in 16 guage. I still love to hunt with it, but you are right, it is getting harder to find 16 guage shells.

I agree that Cabela's, Wal-Mart and Dick's Sporting Goods usually have 16 gauge ammo in stock around here. I buy a few boxes whenever I see them on sale. Take care...

Cabella's or Bass pro would be a 2 hour drive for me. I check each time I go to wal-mart or the local Farm & Ranch store, but they just do not carry them.

two hours for me also, but make the trip to stock up, and peruse the "other goodies" since I'm there :D

I can vouch for the fact that it is quite easy to get hold of here in the U.K. and is very popular in continental Europe; not far behind the 12 as a hunting round in terms of sales there. As in the first thread, I do have difficulty in getting ammo for my 24 bore though. Lagopus.....

Got a beautiful Browning sweet 16! My dad's gun. He gave it to me couple of years ago! I feel your plight about finding 16 ga shells. I reload for it as I dofor every thing I shoot. I just wish Winchester would come out with an AA shells for it as I love to use these shells for reloads! I now own two Brownings also have a 12 ga Mag A5 which I had bought just two day's before my dad gave me his! :) I'd been a pump guy all my life but wanted to get a Semi auto shotgun! Always loved the A5 Brownings since my Dad let me shoot his when I was just starting out hunting. So when I went into my local shop to plunk down a bunch of money for a New Semi I spyed the 12 ga Mag sitting in the rack!! For $575 for a Belguin Browning vs $1200 + for new gun!! It was a no brainer! :)

Well, unfortunately, I don't get out of the county very often. If it wasn't for church, I probably would not make it to town once a week (10 miles one way).

I've got 2 16 guage gun's a steven's 5000 (basically a savage model 311) side by side and a Browning citori o/u built on a correct frame with 24" bbl's (choke tubes) and a straight stock. It is a beautiful upland gun, can carry it all day long and great in thick brush. I can find 16 ga at my dealer in all size's and dram's but is kinda pricey.

Here's a Stevens 530a, built in 1947. She swings like no other gun I own, and hits birds like Thor's hammer!!!
