There is a possibility that I may be moving to Montana. Believe it or not this southern boy is kind of excited about it. I have lived in New York on Lake Erie did that for about 5 years. The other 21 years of my life have been in the south. I am assuming that Montana is a "gun frendly" state. I am trying to find out information on there gun laws where should I start?

If you like to shoot and hunt you'll like Montana. I live West of there one state line over in Idaho and I believe that Montana like Idaho received an F- from the Brady bunch on gun control.

What part of Montana are you looking at. I'm not very familiar with Eastern Montana, but have relatives that live at Swan Lake up by Kalispell. I used to fish every year over on the Clark Fork river and on Kicking Horse lake below Ronan.

You can look up the Fish and Game regulations on the internet and there are several sites that will give you the state carry regs. My computer went down and I lost all my bookmarks or I'd be able to give them to you.

Only the bottom link is an actual State of Montana website. I don't know of a good gun laws FAQ on the State's site itself, but those links should get you started. From the Montana DOJ site, there are direct links to CCW permit info, etc.

Not sure where in Montana I have applied to Customs and Border patrol they have an urgent need for agents in montana. I want a change so I selected Montana plus it means if I am selected I will get hired faster. I start the process on the 30th. I am kinda getting tired of the south and working in corrections. So I have no idea where I will have to move, but mostlikely someware near the border. If I dont get Hired I am still thinking about jumping ship and moving to Montana. When I was if I remember right 12 or 13 I went to Montana with dad to go hunting and had a blast. I was actually brought into this world in Idaho Falls Idaho, but I only lived there 6 months. Kinda going back to my roots. :) If I dont get hired I think I am going to take a vacation their maby a week or so in the summer and a week or so in the winter to do some hunting first.

Thanks for the Replys

Sweetwater is a port with a fair amount of ag traffic through it, so maybe you'll go there? I don't know much about CBP's office locations, etc. I've had some CBP people here on TDY before, but that's about it. Good luck.

Go to your local FFL holder and ask to read the Montana section on gun laws

I too lived in the city (since 6 yrs. old) and chucked it all for the Rocky Mountains of Montana. Have not regretted it at all. Gun laws are liberal and if you want a CCW, it's a "must issue" state as long as your record is clear.
I live on 20 acres in N/W Montana and we have a local border patrol unit in town, might check it out. Every morning I wake, it's a joy. I love the seasons and the wildlife. Have seen on my property a ton of deer, moose, black bear and Grizzly, wolf, turkey and mountain lion.
Whats not to love.......

I live just outside the biggest city in Montana, and even Billings is a gun friendly city. There are basically no restrictions here besides the Federal Laws, in fact our state constitution guarantees all citizens the right to bear arms, regardless of what the Federal government decides. You are allowed to posess all NFA arms including suppressors, full auto, short barrelled rifles, destructive devices, and AOWs.

Hunting and fishing are great opportunities here, you'll definetly be up on the northern border, we have at least 15 ports of entry here, and most are in the Eastern half of the state.

The other 21 years of my life have been in the south. I am assuming that Montana is a "gun frendly" state. I am trying to find out information on there gun laws where should I start? We visited my daughter & sil when they were living in Absarokee. At the time I was a peace officer in CA so I asked about their regs regarding handguns a state patrol officer told me I could carry my Sig Sauer P220 45acp locked & loaded in my car on the seat or the dash but I couldn't conceal it until I entered BLM or USFS boundaries. My sil had worked for a Cheve dealer in Columbus,MT after his navy discharge and said most of the trucks he worked on had holstered loaded revolvers wrapped around the floor gear shift. Absarokee had winter temps of 32 below & lots of snow but the roads in that part of Stillwater County were never plowed, the first vehicle out left tracks in the snow & others followed to the Stillwater mine in Nye,MT eventually making a white covered road, they seldom repaired the huge pot holes my sil pointed them out to me lest I blow a tire & destroy a wheel on our way to the stillwater river to fish for trout.Saw lots of wildlife: turkey poults, black bear, deer, sheep & more in yellowstone:elk, bison, deer, moose.I wasn't impressed with the idiot tourists who stopped their cars in the middle of roads blocking traffic to take pictures of what they thought were tame petting zoo critters like the griz cub they were crowding around to take pictures, they are dumber than rocks getting next to bison & don't heed the warnings they receive not to get close to them .I paid as little attention as possible to the stupids unless they interferred with my progress.I was glad I never sought employment with the park service as a wildlife management biologist after seeing what took place in yellowstone.

Your vehicle is private property and the state concealed carry laws do not apply on private property. The officer was misinformed.

As with too many LEOs, including a relative, they are misinformed on the law. The only place you are required to have a CCW in MT is in towns/cities and mining and logging camps.

Yes, even the concealed carry law is very specific about wording that any activity outside of cities/towns/mining and logging camps is totally acceptable to carry concealed.

Boy, I have thought about eventually moving to Monatna and now that I read these posts I am pretty excited about the idea. It sounds like a GREAT state. Congrats to all who live there in freedom.
