View Full Version : 460 Rowland
Do anyone have some esxperience in reloading the 460 Rowland?
All literatura that I could get talk about AA 7 and Longshot powders.
I pretend to use somo other like 540 , A 2400 , or something similar
Thank you for the info

Well, sitting here at work contemplating strangling some employees I don't have the info infront of me.
But I did do some reloading with a friend who had the conversion kit in a 1911.
I looked at it personally, but with their warnings and my friends gun I can tell you that the 460 is right at the edge of what MOST 1911 frames can handle.
His 1911 only withstood a few hundred rounds, that were not loaded hot.
He began to see stress cracks.
I'll try to dig up the info tonight for you.

Raul: In addition, check this link - if you haven't already: http://www.realguns.com/loads/460Rowland.htm.
Darkker:Thanks for the info about the cracks on your friend's 1911.
I had considered a Rowland conversion a couple of years ago but opted for the .400 CorBon instead.

Would love to see a .460 Rowland "kit" come out for a Glock 21. I feel that the frame material would flex and hold up better than a rigid 1911 frame.
Maybe a aftermarket 6" bbl from Lone Wolf would be in order, with some kind of comp and of course, extra power spring.
I know the 21 is a great platform for the .45Super,however the extra power of the Rowland is untested to my knowledge. -----pruhdlr

Clark that is teh company that made the convertion kits for the 460 Rowland didn't recomend itd use in Glock pistols as well on a few other brands
Also they don't recomend it on military 1911 pistols .
That's why you don't will see 460 rowland based on a Glock frame

The problem with most conversion kits is that they do not address the problem in the correct manner. Most kits want to increase the spring strenght inorder to deal with slide velocity and as your friend found out this does not work well at all. The real problem is barrel lack up and the timing of the unlocking. When loack up properly and locked long enough for the pressure to drop low enough strong springs are not needed and the frame will hold up just fine. In-order to lock them up long enough for the pressure to subside enough to not cause excess slide velocity the pivot link must be change and a new link fitted by a competant Smith, for this type of work they are few and far between. The excessively heavy springs knock the sights below target when the slide slasm home and do not slow the slide velocity down enough to prevent frame and or slide crackin

Thge glocks have a cam that allows the slide to open after firing and they are the fastest opening semi auto that I am aware of. Because the slides open so fast the pressure would be to high and you would experience a famous Glock KaBoom
