In trying to de-rust this seized Marlin rifle I have just been given I tried to remove the fore-end, but after taking out the two retaining screws in the fore-end cap, the wood won't slide forward or out.

Is there a trick to that?

I looked very closely at the Gun parts catalog and even though in the cross reference guide it indicated that it was a 336, I'm pretty sure from the fore-end configuration that it is a Glenfield 30 now.

It is a JC Higgins (Sears Model45) , but doesn't seem to be a 336 as it has no band around the fore end like the 336 but a cap and two retaining screws like the Glenfield 30.

So how do I get the wood off this puppy?

I've slathered the lever and bolt and all available exposed internal parts as well as externals with Fluid Film in an effort to get the lever and bolt moving again.

Oh yeah, I need a butt stock too.

Do I need to find a Glenfield or will a 336 butt stock fit?

If it is rusted as bad as I read your post, it may take some patient persistance. Wiggle and pull gentle.

You have to pull the magazine tube before you can remove the forend. First get the plug in the front of the magazine out and the magazine spring too. The Flying Parts Warning applies. Remove the front band screw and wiggle the band and tube off the barrel. Tilt the front of the forend down a bit and pull it off.

Hub,

There is a product at midwayusa under lubricants and solvents Called Kano Kroil. Go to the Solvents section and serch for cano. You can get it in either areosol or liquid. From the reviews it is supposed to get all sorts of grud like rust from barrels ect. I haven't tried it myself yet but I'm going to be giving it a try. One of the reviewer said he used it work to loosen rusted boiler bolts.

Wood will bond with rusted steel, but mostly steel expands when it really gets rusty. You may have a real fight on your hands. If you want to save the fore end, might find it difficult to get penetrating oil to the rest without oil soaking the wood.

Cabela's carry wood replacement stocks. If it's really badly rusted inside and out your probably not going to be able to salvage it. Make a wall hanger out of it and enjoy the stories around it.
