Ballard cut, micro groove and other rifling? I'm just curious because I just ordered my 1895 Marlin Cowboy 45-70 today and it has "Ballard cut" rifling.

I had posted a question earlier about using 457124 cast bullets in this rifle and was going to put his there but I lost my previous thread. As I recall the answer was "Yes. if I sized them to .459." Will this still be the case with ballard rifling?

I'd slug it to be sure, but probably that will be OK.

Micro-groove barrels, it seems, tended to run on the large side. They were/are particulary unkind to bore-ride nose designs.... but work just great when cleaned of all copper, and with bullets sized to the throat/bore.

Marlin couldn't win the PR battle and finally gave up on Micro-Groove, it seems.
