View Full Version : Hornady 170FP performance on Deer?

I've finally found a very accurate load in my 30-30 using Hornady's 170g FP. The velocity is only 2025fps.

This bullet doesn't have as much lead exposed at the tip compared to Remington's 170g core-lokt SP bullet so I'm wondering how well it will expand if the bullet doesn't hit a shoulder bone or something.

Does anyone have experience with the Hornady 170g on whitetail? Does it expand well?

Thanks.

If that bullet is the Hornady Interlock,it is MYfavorite jacketed whitetail bullet in the 30/30 and 300Savage calibers.
I have 1 shot fired,and 1 drop dead result,with my Win '94 30/30 carbine.
I have since switched to cast bullets, exclusively.

Yes, it's their 170gr 30-30 Interlock bullet.

I don't shoot that particular bullet, but I'f had great results with Hornedy interlock bullets and for that matter most of the Hornedy bullets.

Don't know, but Hornady has a rep for making quality stuff and 170's out of a 30-30 have the rep of hitting like the hammer of Thor and being able to be used on most any beast in NA....or atleast they did until about 1930 or so.

I used the Hornady 170 in my 32 winchester special to take a large buck last year. Performance should be pretty identical to the 30/30. Went in high about three ribs back hitting a rib solidly, angled down and forward making a nasty wound channel through the lungs and hit a rib solidly on the way out. Reentered the leg, (sort of the leg pit area) and hit bone. The jacket came off and the core exited after breaking it's leg bone. I WAS IMPRESSED.

Needless to say the buck dropped in it's tracks.

Fear not. It'll strike like the Hammer of Thor.

I've taken a few whittails with that bullet, and it has always been a reliable performer. They can be a little tough if no bone at all is hit, but have always provided reliable kills. The Sierra 170 is a much softer bullet, and I would be more reluctant to use it on tougher shots, or larger game, boar shoulder shots, etc. Both bullets have shot better in my rifles than the Speers for some reason. Remington bulk coreloc's are another good bullet.

With proper shot placement you are good to go.

Great Bullet choice.
I have used them in alot of 30 cal weapons, and always have had great performance and accuracy. don't fret your FPS, it'll get the job done!

Shot an old doe with a 170 gr Hornady out of my 30/30 before it was rechambered. She was about 50 yards away faceing me.Put her head down to eat acorns and I put it at the junction of her neck and shoulder,it went down the left side of her spine and broke all of her ribs on that side dropped below the spine, came to rest under the hide next to the .......mm.. exhaust port.Didn't quit exit but almost at nearly 2100 fps at the muzzle.
