I have a Savage .410 under .22, model 24.
There are hunts available in the canyon, the one Evel Knievel tried to jump; that allow this gun to be used.
Hunting deer with a slug is entirely new to me, but I stalk like a bowhunter because I am a bowhunter;
Is there a load I could use that would even put a deer down?
This would be 40 yards or probably much closer.

I'd sure probably think about using a 12 gauge. That's been a proven deer killer in the slug gun states. I wouldn't doubt that up close a 410 slug would kill, but I'd certainly feel better with something bigger. I know I read about guys taking deer between 50 and 75 yards with 12 gauge slugs all the time.

I believe your talking about Idaho's short range season.

I'd look for a 12 guage in a pump or another repeater type of action, follow up shots can be handy at times. Shotgun slugs have came a long way with many new developments in the last few years.
I also have a Savage 24 in 22/410 and wouldn't recommend it as a deer gun, but about perfect for whistle pigs, rabbits and the like.
I have my eye out for a slug gun second hand as we have a hunt or two in this area for deer and elk, i have considered, that are also short range weapon only.

I have heard that they make a special load for deer in .410

It isn't the Federal hollow point slug. I've done a fair bit of wetpack testing and it gave the least penetration of any bullet tested. Basically, it was a tennis ball sized surface blow-out, 4" deep.

A .410 is a really poor choice for a slug gun, if you want the honest truth. Really a 12 or even 20 is far ahead of it in terms of capability......

Convinced!
I'll just use my bow; it's more fun anyway!

My home state allowed the use of 410 slugs several seasons ago. I had the shotgun and proceeded to procure different brands of slugs. The requirement was 1/4 oz slugs only (109.375 grains) while 1/5 oz slugs (87.5 grains) were illegal. There were only two US ammo makers that met that requirement. Even the muzzleloaders have heaver grain round ball loadings. The next year my state dropped the 410 usage so never got to try its usage. I had to pospone my plans that year due to lateness and dismal accuracy at 25 yards.

Lack of a proper load is the biggest trouble. Lack of a proper firearm is another. I do think that the "potential" is there.

Make a good one go at 1000fps with near +/- 220grains of weight. A Beartooth bullet would be a +! A rifled tube with good sights could work?

The .410 slug load is a very poor choice for hunting Deer. I once shot a Groundhog with a .410 slug at some 25 yards and the Groundhog, after taking the slug in the chest area, just dropped, rolled over a couple of time and ran back to his hole. He left very little blood.
