Trying to get an old MEC ready to reload some 20 gauge shells. All I seem to have around for hulls are a couple thousand Winchester Super X 7/8 oz. hulls. I am using RXP20 wads, 15.1 grains Unique, and w209 primers. The shot isn't filling the hulls enough so the crimp is folding in the top of the shell.

Are the Winchester SuperX hulls and good for reloading?
Do I just need a different wad?

Are these the one piece AA type shell? The data I've got shows you can go to 16.0 grains. There's not that much data shown for the RXP20 wad with this combination. The WAA20 wad probably is a better fit. There's a considerable amount of adjustment available with the MEC crimper. If you don't have a manual you can download it from the MEC site.

Another option is a thin wad in the bottom of the shot cup. A 28 gauge .135" wad is recommended with some loads or you can make your own.

Use just enouch wad pressure to seat the wad. Raise the rammer tube until it barely moves at the bottom of the stroke.

Jack,

Thanks for the info. I tried to back off the crimper but it still tears up the Winchester Super X's. They are a one piece, like the AA'a but the AA's load fine and the Super X's just don't work. Guess I willhave to buy some AA hulls as I am getting low on them.

Is it an issue with the crimp style, 6pt vs 8pt? I can't picture the "tears up" part. What exactly is it doing?

Jack's suggestion on the wad may be the idea for filling the hull but the tearing?
