So I was at the Bass pro in harrisburg this weekend. Now they had some large dealer rep thing going on. So, there was this Air gun rep showing this video of a hog hunt. You see a hog turn and face the camera then you hear a weird gun shot and the hog goes down, then they show the rifle, a .177 pellet gun.... No backup gunners where shown on the video, although I expect there was a 12ga around the corner. Did anyone else see the display?

What Ken said. I can't imagine that being a very good idea, having known a few people who had trouble with head shots with ordinary centerfire rifles.

A small one in a trap? Maybe.

Probably an air rifle is better than a fly swatter, but makes about as much sense. I know there are some very potent 45 and 50 caliber air rifles, but even those may be a little light for a wild hog.

He makes a good point. Air rifles are still guns and need to be treated as such, they can kill... But I would not make a habit of hunting hogs with one unless it was of the .50 european varieties, even then I'd rather have my 45-70

Not to be way opinionated but that is totaly on the unethical side, not to mention potentially dangerous. Advocateing Big game hunting with a pellet rifle! I have scene this video before, and it still annoys me. Sure i can kill a pig with a straight pin just got to poke it in the rear right so it jumps off the cliff. :D

I wouldn't be near as worried if it ran off, as if it came after me! Just think of having to pump it up 27 times while a hog is chewing on your leg :eek:

The only person stupid enough to try and shoot a hog with a pellet gun would be the salesman trying to sell the pellet gun. I'm sure you could kill one, but the smaller the caliber, the higher the degree of difficulty.
I have killed many of them with the old 223 rem with a 55 grain bullet. My friend has used a .17 Rem on them with the 37 grain bullet. At fifty yards, the results I saw were predictable. The bullet knocked it down but it got up and ran away. I'm sure the bullet blew up on the shoulder. Too high velocity and too thin of a jacketed bullet. The 223 is a different story, better bullet.

Hate to say it folks, but I've done it. :D About 10 years old and in my Daddy's hog pen. Mind you, it wasn't wild but weighed about 40# and I brained it. The most vivid memory I have of the occassion is the whipping I got.:(

I can't imagine I'd be foolish enough to try what's in the video unless I was REALLY hungry, but how about some perspective:

How is a firearm not an air gun? They both run on compressed air; the only difference is how the air gets compressed and released. How is a bullet not a particular type of pellet?

Anyway, I still can't imagine me trying that stunt without some kind of unusual influence.

Hang on, looks legit to me, and if that thing will get 1,600 fps, it sure heck can kill. That's moving faster than most .22 LRs........ Is it something that I would do? Probably not. I'm partial to my .475 Linebaugh........:D

The most accurate gun I own is a .177 air rifle at 10 meters the hole in the target from 5 shots out of a machine rest is the same diameter as the pellet. That said at 40 yards all it does to a squirrel is stun them with a head shot. I think if I were to hunt hogs I would use the 454 Rossi with lots of back up in the tube and if I was to limit myself to a single shot I would take the 45-70. All the air rifle would do is P them off.

A friend who really, truly is a gun expert, told me he was planning to kill a 100+ lb hog with a .177 Beeman hi-power airgun to prove it could be done --- a stunt. He had studied hogs skulls and there is a thin part on top between the eyes and he was planning to shoot down from a tree stand. That probably would work.
Come to think of it, that was a while ago and I don't believe I have seen him since he told me he was planning to do it. :)

For general purpose hog hunting with an airgun I think holding the gun by the barrel and using the stock as a club would probably be a better bet.
