hey, could anyone tell me what the difference is between 700x and 800x powders? Ive always used 700x for my target loads for 12, 20, and 28 ga with no problems at all. But looking at this newer 800x it is only really good for 28 and 20 gauges. or so says my reloading manual. also it seems to take more 800x powder to do the equivalent work of 700x. is this the case?

It's a slower powder, so you will need more to get velocity equal to 700-X. The benefit is that you can reach a higher velocity or use a heavier load of shot. 800-X has large flakes and doesn't meter well. I got more uniform results if I slapped the charge bar a few times before pushing it the other way to drop the charge. Don't use a powder baffle under your bottle.

I was once given some 800x and the powder drops were so inconsistent that I now scale-weigh the charges when I feel a yen to even use the stuff. They keep producing it so someone must be buying it, but there're a lot better powders out there for the 20 & 28 gauges. "Unique" is one.

Edit: BTW, what's your recipe in 28 ga. with 700X? I can't find one. Gotta be runnin' pretty high pressure unless you're reducing your shot payload. Only found ONE in 20 ga.: 3/4 oz shot in Win. hulls, RXP20 wad @11,800 psi. That's right at max pressure. Be safe. Adios.
