I am looking for a legal way around the paperwork and tax stamp required to own a short barreled shotgun here's my idea. pistol grip + rem 870 reciever + 10'' RIFLED barrel = pistol.

Why not. no differant than using rat shot in a .357:D

The end point to all this is building a Masterkey, but without all the red tape.

If it started life as a regular M870 shotgun, its still a shotgun.

It started life as a shotgun, it will always be a shotgun and it will always be illegal if it has a barrel under 18" and a overall length under 26".....unless you get the stamp.

Not sure what you are refering to as a "masterkey" but if you're talking about a door opener, a 12 gauge with a 18.5" barrel and 3" chamber knocks just fine.

Over 50 cal would be a destructive device.

If it's legal in your state, why not just make it legit and pay the $200? The paperwork isn't very difficult. Trying to go around the rules just attracts attention and may land you in jail.

Check the Shotgun news. I believe there are some that can be had with a $5 stamp, classified as AOW or any other weapon.

How they got that way and what it takes to get one, I don't know. But a Class III dealer can tell you.

Don't fool around with such things unless you enjoy time in the federal slammer.

Good idea on the AOW. I don't remember exactly what the deal is for those. The best place I know of to do your research on this sort of thing is silencertalk.com, everything you need to know (and more) about the process has been posted there, and can be found with some searching.

The receiver has to have left the factory without a shoulder stock, otherwise they were manufactured as and still remain a title I shotgun. I wouldn't recommend building your own but if you buy one, keep in mind they require the same registration as a title II firearm but the tax stamp is in fact only five dollars IIRC.

If you get one and you ever have to use it in a sticky situation, you better have that tax stamp stuck to your forehead as most police officers will automatically assume you have a sawed off shotgun.

Sounds like an easy arrest for the ATF!

An outfit in Canada makes those snubbies as an AOW.

IIRC if you do a Conversion it requires an SBS $200 stamp, but if it comes from a Maker as an AOW it's only the $5 + Rectal Exam.

Wonder if you could pay extra and forgo the rectal exam?
I'm thinking if you do the conversion yourself, you might be a manufacturer? I'd certainly check with the ATF before I cut one myself.

Mossberg makes a short one under another name. 12" or 14" i think.

From the factory, its an AOW. $5 stamp. It only holds 2 in the mag tho.

Just get a legal 18" 12ga, then it can always be a field gun too. The shorties aren't worth the hassle.
