Got an 870 combo on the way. Come's with a nice vent rib barrel and a rifled/cantilever shorter barrel. I think this could be a versitle jumping off point for me as I am new to shotgunning. This set up will cover a lot of bases from birds and clay to bears and deer. It'll find it's niche for me the more I work with it.

My question is for the Cantilever guys. I'm looking into a Bushnell red dot sight to dress up this 870, (not the Eotech type). The application would be brush cover while scouting game trails in the thick stuff. I think a red dot has potential for fast acquisition of a sudden threat. I will eventually aspire to a scope for deer hunting proper.

So, Please share your opinions of the Remi cantilever. I've read about the "spring board" effect. I'm a good fit with the 870 but the cantilever model is on order so I haven't met it in person yet. If it's unsatisfactory I'll likely shift to the rifle sighted barrel but then still need a mounting sollution for dots/scopes in the brush. The shroud mounts look functional but the integral cantilever seemed like a good factory sollution. In regards to the red dot vs. a "spring board" mount it would seem that a slightly more forward mount would have less "spring" but maybe more awkward to utilize. Whudya say? Thanks.

In my experience the cantilever works quite well. I do not know about any springboard effect, but I know rifle barrels flex when firing and therefore you sight in what you intend to shoot at the real deal. As long as you sight the gun it with the loads you intend to use, I don't see why you would care what springs where after the projectile is long gone.

My thoughts exactly. I just worried that it might be really pronounced. Glad to hear it's not. All high performance metal flexes. It would shatter otherwise. As long as the gun is made tough, which I know they are even though I had a small dought here, I'm proud to begin my adventure into shotgunning with an 870. Sad, do you shoot a cantilever Remington?

Hey,

I ordered a " Hastings Rifled Barrel w/Catilever Scope Mount " .., I didn't want to remove my adjustable sights & finally (after about a year ) decided to " Cut " approx an inch off the cantilever to make it fit !! (less spring board effect ?)
