We found these while hiking in Calico Canyon which is Northwest of Maybell CO. They were still attached to the skeleton which was wadded up in a mini log jamb in the bottom of the canyon. I couldn't tell how the elk died but it might have winter killed.

Nice find RJ. Looks like it was either on it's way up to a nice unique 6x7 with another years or two, or, it was in regression on it's way down. Will make a nice wall decoration anyway!

Interesting find for sure, I have not seen any like them before.

On the age question Shawn brought up if you have a tooth your fish and game dept. might age it for you. I know Idaho F&G will or at least would a few years ago for free.

Judging from the wear on the molars, (I'm no pro) it looked like maybe a 4-5 year old bull? That and the ivories weren't worn that much. Still pretty round.

Where it was I sure wouldn't have wanted to drag or haul it out. It was a pretty good chore just getting the head out. When we got back to the Expedition, I hacked the skull cap and the upper jaw with the ivories off with my trusty axe. The wife wouldn't "let that stinky thing" ride all the way home in the back. Funny thing SHE's the one who thought we "should take it home" :D
